Not a bad book with quiet a few patterns. Unfortunately many if not most of the patterns described are not accompanied with a picture or drawing of the finished fly. Pictures are a terrific advantage when tying a particular fly for the first time, it gives the tyer an idea of what the finished product should look like, balance, proportions etc. Unfortunately this is where this well written (the written word only) book is let down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative patterns, great information, a GREAT book!, April 12, 2011

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Even though this book was published in 1994, the patterns and information are still cutting edge. How many people do you know who carry a Turbo Wasp or Lightning Bug pattern in their box? Probably not many and that's a mixed blessing. Good for those of us who are looking for novel flies that work but haven't been shown to the fish a million and one times. Bad for those who haven't tied and tried these innovative flies. In addition to a great summary of how, why, and where to fish terrestrials, the authors explain and detail the taxonomy of each major group before describing a selection of patterns that best immitate the bugs. Little annecdotes are scattered throughout and the history of the terrestrial "movement" is gradually spelled out without ever sounding like a history lesson. By using inexpensive, readily available materials, these authors present flies that look GREAT, are easy to tie, and can quickly be lined into fly boxes with a minimum of work. Gone are the days of tying with messy hair, knotted legs, and carved balsa wood. This book shows the tier how to quickly fill boxes with patterns that work and look great. Highly recommended!!!
