This book is easy to read, to the point, and is a great resource to help dog owners prevent training mistakes. I love the section on crate training, because crates are widely misunderstood and misused. I love the section on the need to catch your dog doing behaviors you like. It is likewise refreshing to see a section on punishment that acknowledges its misuse and the potential fall out, but also how it can be done strategically if it is used at all. Its a book I will recommend to my clients.

Having a yellow lab, Sunshine and flat Coat retriever, Maui our family is challenged with one being brighter than the other, plus Maui is the younger and less trained. Loved how the (pack thinking) has gone out the door. This book has given me great science to base my future training actions for properly training my girls. The resources Suzanne gives are wonderful and will benefit everyone reading this book. So many things make more sense now having read this book.

In our current climate of information over-load, the average dog owner is getting advice from the internet, well-intentioned friends,TV and self proclaimed experts. This can put people and their dogs at risk for injury, often leading to giving up on the dog and or dumping him at a shelter where he is likely to be euthanized. Some dogs do get re-homed, repeating the same cycle with another family!

Dr. Suzanne Hetts, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist , has written an intelligent book for dog owners which not only explains why things go awry when dog owners do not apply the right strategy, but also how to resolve the problem behavior and prevent future occurrences! Each chapter has been thoughtfully organized withThe Mistake, My Best Advice, The Summary, and The Resources. Dr. Hetts also included some touching personal stories!

Whether this is your first dog or you’ve had several, this book is a must read. Dr. Hetts’ sage advice, science-based material and knowledge will help a lot of people and the dogs they love.

If they could, I know the dogs would thank her!!!

This book should be compulsory reading for every dog owner/trainer/club instructor in Australia as it would significantly reduce the number of pet dogs being surrendered to animal shelters.

I've always been a great admirer of Dr Hetts. She is referenced so often in force free dog training/behavior literature.
I was so disappointed when she suggested a Scat Mat or other booby traps for a dog who gets into the trash. In the time it takes to place and turn on one of those things, I could have just taken out the trash.

Plus, if a professional is going to suggest something like that, she needs to also warn readers of the possible fallout - especially in dogs who might already have issues - shy, nervous, separation anxiety, etc..

She also told a story about making a reactive dog watch other dogs while wrapped in a towel so she couldn't react. I would think a professional of her caliber would instead choose counter conditioning and desensitization.

As I continued to read, I felt like this book was more of an infomercial for a fee website. A the end of chapters, she would refer readers webinars (that had fees) for more information.

As a Certified Behavior Consultant & CPDT-KA I have read just about every book out there on dog training. There are several areas that impressed me about this book, one is the fact that it clears up so many common misconceptions about dogs, dog training and the myths regarding behaviors. For young professionals just starting out it's a wonderful reference book and just as important is the true education dog owners can obtain from it. Finally, I hope it opens the eyes and minds of dog owners to seek the help only from positive reinforcement professionals. It is clear that anyone still utilizing traditional training methods have not kept up with the evolution of dog training & behavior modification. It's sort of like they are still using IBM Selectric typewriters - things that have become obsolete because there are much more productive ways now.
Looking forward to a sequel.
