This expose is about an international sex trade in the underworld of Cambodia in which children were abused by 'sex tourists' from America; most of the girls were Vietnamese. There was an article in the 'Newsweek' magazine, but this book gives more details and ways to help stop this horrid crime.

They were caught in a "Catch-22" of being forced into a place...

4.0 out of 5 stars Important issue that needs exposure, February 12, 2005
This review is from: Terrify No More: Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation to Win Their Freedom (Hardcover)
This book is not sensationalism or extremist. It is the critical story of the types of abuses that go on around the world. There is still slavery in much of the world, and it is inexcusable for people to ignore it. It focuses on a specific episode of child sex trafficking in Cambodia, but it touches on forced labor, kidnapping, and other issues throughout the book. One reviewer falsely claims it is anti-prostitution. The book goes out of its way to show that the people involved were taken against their will and wanted to leave, and that it wasn't prostitution "by choice".

The book is written by the founder and president of International Justice Mission, a group dedicated to establishing justice where there is injustice. They work to not only remove the oppressed from the situation, but to change the culture so that it doesn't reoccur with fresh victims. They lobby, educate, train, work with local law enforcement to enforce LOCAL laws, not to establish an American/Western bias on things.

The writing style is a little disjointed, because it cuts from the main story of the Cambodian intervention to introduce characters important for the mission or to highlight other aspects of slavery. This can distract at times, but it is otherwise well-written. It handles very delicate, sometimes very distasteful material with all the respect it deserves.

Jesus said, "If you did it for one of the least of these, you did it for Me". This is an issue that isn't a Christian or non-Christian issue. Anyone should see that this issue deserves attention and support, by anyone's standard of morality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not sensationalism...at all., March 28, 2005
This review is from: Terrify No More: Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation to Win Their Freedom (Hardcover)
I don't see how anyone can read this book and not see the point. Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world, I don't think Gary is trying to destroy it. That would be impossible. But what this book does go after is the fact that it's not women who are choosing to do this. It is children being kidnapped and brutalized at the hands of those who should be protecting them. I don't care what you say...that is wrong. I would also suggest that you read The Natashas which focuses on the sex trafficing industry in Europe. And for my european friend who commented previously, she might find some interesting insights and realize that just because someone is a prostitute, doesn't mean they are there by choice. Some are, most aren't. It just makes me sick to know that there are true battles and struggles going on, and when someone actually tries to make a difference when no one else will, others criticize them. MSNBC also has a video report on this kind of thing they did a few years back on their website. How can it be sensationalism? No one ever wants to talk about it. This is a worthwhile read.

If you are interested in women's rights in general, Princess Sultana, Princess Sultana's Daughters, and Princess Sultana's Circle are also all very good reads and insights into Saudi Arabia and how women are treated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read., March 4, 2005

I just finished reading this book. Do yourself and the world a favor and read it. Gary Haugen is a Christian, and that does come across in the book. But whether you are a Christian or not, you will be touched and moved by the stories in this book. Ignore the one negative review here (I don't know why "moderate christians" would not agree that selling children into sex slavery is wrong...). Anyway, this is a powerful book. Read it.

Haugen, Gary A. Terrify No More. Nashville, TN. W Publishing Group. 2005.
This riveting book by Gary A. Haugen, founder and president of the International Justice Mission(IJM), first-handedly tells the story of a mission proposed by members of IJM, to rescue child sex slaves from Savy Pak, a city in Cambodia that is infamous for its sex trafficking and sex tourism. IJM is a non-profit organization that fights for justice in a world riddled with injustice. This book is amazing as the reader is placed in the middle of the action. However, the content of the book can be extremely disturbing as one reads of the conditions and terrors that these young children face; but there is an amazing sense of hope that comes through to let the reader know that this is not a hopeless case, there is something that is being done. This book traces chronologically the path that IJM took to rescue a few of the millions of children that are trapped in the sex trade. Photos of the children and the conditions help the reader grasp reality through pictures. The book is geared towards those of the college age and older; an easy read that emphasizes the cause of justice in an unjust world. This book gave me a first hand account of the fight against sex trafficking which is what my senior thesis is discussing, I used this book as a basis to understnd more about the sex trade, and those who fight against it.

This review is from: Terrify No More: Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation to Win Their Freedom (Hardcover)
IJM (International Justice Mission) is a non-profit organization with a heart to see Justice done in all the earth. This book is a combination of biographical descriptions of the group and the key individuals that make it up, interwoven with an account of one of their ventures which ended up in breaking up some brothel rings of forced minor prostitution. They go into the world, and use existing government law, and with the local governments, to empower a government to see why justice and enforcing their own laws are morally and politically right and expedient. As for their own motivation, they remark that the Church as a whole, and society, has done Ok as far as mercy and evangelism go; but that we (Christians) have passed over, ignored, seemingly not seen, the issue of Justice. The book is pointed, painfully clear, and compassionately zealous to reach out to be doing acts of Justice for the glory of God and the good of mankind.

4.0 out of 5 stars In response to Julia Truelove, February 8, 2006
By
This review is from: Terrify No More: Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation to Win Their Freedom (Hardcover)
I thought the book was a little jumpy. It deffinitely wasn't the best book I have ever read in my life. But then again, the purpose was not to be a literary classic. The purpose of this book is to raise awareness. So the book does it's job.

I read some reviews before my copy of the book arrived. Julia's stood out to me because it was a one star review.

She said that "no one cares if you are a Christian." Just because you do not care doesn't mean that it is not important to others. Some people do care, even if you don't. No one made you get the book. If the author's Christianity turned you off that much then you could have put the book down, or you could have simply not bought it.

The author never says "Our President George W. Bush." He mentions the President twice. Each time he simply writes "President George W. Bush."

Basically her "review" is nothing more than a rambling paragraph in which she vents her hatred of Christianity and the current President. If you have something against a religion and and politician, that's cool. Is a book review really the place to do that?

As I said before, the book isn't the best read in the world, but it really does give the reader at least a clue as to what is happening. That is the most important thing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Combating A Crime Worse Than Death., August 12, 2005
This review is from: Terrify No More: Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation to Win Their Freedom (Hardcover)
This expose is about an international sex trade in the underworld of Cambodia in which children were abused by 'sex tourists' from America; most of the girls were Vietnamese. There was an article in the 'Newsweek' magazine, but this book gives more details and ways to help stop this horrid crime.

They were caught in a "Catch-22" of being forced into a place by brutal adults and then arrested by other adults for being there. Some were deported back to Vietnam after their dramatic rescue.

As a global force, Americans are able to generate wealth, exert governmental powers, and impact the world 'in a way that's unprecented in the history of nation states.' And yet, here we have profound poverty, injustice, oppression and suffering. And a special kind of abuse. You can help to save these youth from enslavement and bondage to freedom, from a place of darkness, fear and bondage to places of hope, rescue, relief, courage and justice.

Some ways to get involved to help seek justice and fight against injustice are to pray, prepare, volunteer, make financial gifts, and tell others. Be advocates for justice in an unjust world.

"It is possible to change the world" so "that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more." (Psalm 10:18) Written by Gregg Hunter who formerly served on the President's Cabinet of Young Life, with the help of Gary Haugen, president of International Justice Mission, which investigates such injustices in this world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensitivity, Combined With a Special Smack-Down, October 19, 2008
By
Wolfe Moffat (Franklinville, NY) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Terrify No More: Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation to Win Their Freedom (Hardcover)
I suppose people might find a title such as that mine, at the least, inappropriate. But to the people that suffer injustices, such as the ones mentioned in this book, it is highly appropriate. "Terrify No More" is the story of men on a mission, with the help needed to pull off what seemed to be impossible. To rescue little Cambodian girls who know of life in these Cambodian brothels, to tell the story is a great importance.

I can't imagine the injustice these girls had to have felt. A lot of them were promised work if they moved away from their families. They were promised work making noodles, or work in a textile place. But once they took the ride, and arrived to that place of work, they realized that not only were they in for a world of hurt, but humiliation that could last a lifetime. And the pimps that own these places would tell them that wearing a smile, and having sex with strangers was the life they better get used to, or else! And when you think of young girls, teenagers might come to mind. But some of the girls are as young as five. That's sick!

The story of International Justice Mission is nothing short of amazing, as you learn about these everyday people with the skills to rescue these young girls. And while it is simply a job to them, they are nothing short of heroes in the eyes of these little girls. These workers who feel God has called them to shut down the trashy dumps that these girls call home, and to do something better for them.

When you are faced with what you or I might call a "hopeless situation," I'd encourage you to read the likes of these burdens! Because I'm telling you, I may have lost jobs, I may have even been arrested for something petty, but it just doesn't compare to what these girls went through. What makes it sad is that it still goes on. Some girls from a certain place might get rescued, but they are still out there.

But certain people have gotten justice, and that's awesome! You wouldn't wish life like this on any kind of enemy, no way. Yeah, I'd say you would have to have a certain sensitivity to deal with something like this. And then to get old-school, you'd want to put a smack down on the bad guys that leave a message to never forget!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Painful, powerful book -- may change your life, August 19, 2007

This review is from: Terrify No More: Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation to Win Their Freedom (Hardcover)
Sometimes enlightenment comes like a cold slap in the face. That's what this book delivers -- stories of abuse and oppression that most people don't know exist in our world today. I didn't. But Haugen and Hunter, in a style that is smooth and suspenseful, tell the stories of numerous victims of slavery and oppression who were helped through brave undercover operations by true-life heroes. At times heart-breaking and painful, at others joyful and celebretory, this book is hard to put down. You won't want to, but you will want to give copies to your friends. Nicely done. Thanks for helping me to understand the world just a little bit better outside my own whitewashed life.

This review is from: Terrify No More: Young Girls Held Captive and the Daring Undercover Operation to Win Their Freedom (Hardcover)
This covers examples of what International Justice Mission goes through while they try to defend God through fighting oppression and putting those who hold them in bondage to justice. There were a few various stories to show what they go through to plan helping these people, but for the most part it was about helping slave girls from even the ages of 5 years old out of forced prostitution. You get to see the courage they must have to help, and the love and dedication they have to their work. I recommend reading more of Gary Haugen's books too
