Biography

Virginia’s extreme sound nihilists PIG DESTROYER deliver savage grindcore that is both intentionally confrontational and thoroughly pummeling. PIG DESTROYER formed in 1997, when vocalist J.R. Hayes and guitarist Scott Hull decided to unite in their efforts to create utterly destructive grindcore. The trio began rehearsing and immediately found that their common musical interests produced… Read more in Amazon's Pig Destroyer Store

Editorial Reviews

"skull-crushing" - MTV.com

"One of the 25 most important bands in metal" - ALTERNATIVE PRESS

PIG DESTROYER return with Terrifyer, the long-awaited full-length follow up to their critically acclaimed album Prowler in the Yard. PxDx's frighteningly compelling mix of metal, grind, thrash and punk rock seethes with an intensity that will unnerve the unprepared. PIG DESTROYER's deranged, vicious attack envelops the listener in a cocoon of grisly nihilism. Terrifyer features 32 minutes of PIG DESTROYER's finest music to date as well as the 32 minute audio DVD track Natasha, mixed in glorious 5.1 Surround Sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dear God, November 7, 2004

Wheelchair Assassin (The Great Concavity) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Terrifyer (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
You might have thought Pig Destroyer would have a hard time topping the twisted genius that was Prowler in the Yard. Well, if so, you would've thought wrong, because Terrifyer takes this band's sensory assault and expands it in an even scarier and better direction. Throwing together various genres of heavy music at will, these guys have reached beyond the confines of the grindcore genre to form their own pummelling, skull-crushing creation. What Napalm Death started, Scott Hull and Co. are taking to the next logical level.

What sets Pig Destroyer apart from other bands of their ilk is that they're not really about speed, or heaviness, or technicality. Yes, what they do is fast, heavy, and technical, but Pig Destroyer really score points with the atmosphere they create. Plenty of bands try to sound demented, but these guys are able to communicate a whole lot of emotion and meaning (all of it bad) through a combination of swirling guitar noise, throat-ripping shrieks, and some of the most frenetic drumming known to man. Not only does this album cherry-pick from punk, grind, and thrash, but it somehow manages to take the better elements from each of these genres, making it sound more like an accomplished synthesis of sounds than a forced attempt at being "eclectic."

As with Prowler in the Yard, the tracks on Terrifyer don't stand on their own so much as bleed into one frighteningly doomy whole. In fact, if you didn't look at the track display on your stereo, you might not even notice when one track ended and another began. It's almost progressive in its own bizarre way. Overall, this is yet another great album for scaring relatives, friends, and Nickelback fans everywhere.

On the down side, the 37-minute audio DVD bonus track, "Natasha," is nothing to write home about. There are some of the nice grinding riffs and scathing vocals you'd expect from this band, but overall it's mostly just silence and some mediocre stabs at atmospherics. If this track had contained some more of the aural destruction these guys are known for, I would've felt a tad better about my investment. But hey, I guess nothing's perfect. Except, of course, for the last Meshuggah CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is a brutal assault on your senses!, December 12, 2005
do not listen to this band if you're not prepared. you will feel like you're getting trained to go to outer space. this band will twist you, it will flip you, it will frap your body until your bones hurt, and when you squeal, they'll just go faster and harder. this band's combination of rock, grind, metal, and punk makes for a unique listen. for other grind, listen to Leng Tch'e, Napalm Death, Benumb, Nasum, and Cephalic Carnage.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extremely good cd..., June 15, 2005
This review is from: Terrifyer (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Ok this was the first Pig Destroyer cd I ever got (basically cuz it was the only one available). Now I had listened to Pig Destoyer before a bunch, and thought they were heavy, had a unique sound, and was just a breathe of fresh air from all the sound alikes that we hear on MTV (god I hate that station...) and on the radio. When I first popped this cd in I was excited as (blank) and after about the 11th song I felt that I was just in a new world, for the first couple of listens most people would say that they all sound alike and its all noise, but if your not an idiot you'll listen more and find that all the songs, although alike, are each their own little works of art, songs I feel that stick out the most in the begining are pretty in casts, thumbsucker, gravedancer, and lost cause (favorite song on cd). So if you are not satisfied with the new "radio friendly" mudvayne and slipknot then give this cd a listen, you won't be sorry.
