Dear God,
By Wheelchair Assassin (The Great Concavity) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Terrifyer (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
You might have thought Pig Destroyer would have a hard time topping the twisted genius that was Prowler in the Yard. Well, if so, you would've thought wrong, because Terrifyer takes this band's sensory assault and expands it in an even scarier and better direction. Throwing together various genres of heavy music at will, these guys have reached beyond the confines of the grindcore genre to form their own pummelling, skull-crushing creation. What Napalm Death started, Scott Hull and Co. are taking to the next logical level.
What sets Pig Destroyer apart from other bands of their ilk is that they're not really about speed, or heaviness, or technicality. Yes, what they do is fast, heavy, and technical, but Pig Destroyer really score points with the atmosphere they create. Plenty of bands try to sound demented, but these guys are able to communicate a whole lot of emotion and meaning (all of it bad) through a combination of swirling guitar noise, throat-ripping shrieks, and some of the most frenetic drumming known to man. Not only does this album cherry-pick from punk, grind, and thrash, but it somehow manages to take the better elements from each of these genres, making it sound more like an accomplished synthesis of sounds than a forced attempt at being "eclectic." As with Prowler in the Yard, the tracks on Terrifyer don't stand on their own so much as bleed into one frighteningly doomy whole. In fact, if you didn't look at the track display on your stereo, you might not even notice when one track ended and another began. It's almost progressive in its own bizarre way. Overall, this is yet another great album for scaring relatives, friends, and Nickelback fans everywhere. On the down side, the 37-minute audio DVD bonus track, "Natasha," is nothing to write home about. There are some of the nice grinding riffs and scathing vocals you'd expect from this band, but overall it's mostly just silence and some mediocre stabs at atmospherics. If this track had contained some more of the aural destruction these guys are known for, I would've felt a tad better about my investment. But hey, I guess nothing's perfect. Except, of course, for the last Meshuggah CD.

do not listen to this band if you're not prepared. you will feel like you're getting trained to go to outer space. this band will twist you, it will flip you, it will frap your body until your bones hurt, and when you squeal, they'll just go faster and harder. this band's combination of rock, grind, metal, and punk makes for a unique listen. for other grind, listen to Leng Tch'e, Napalm Death, Benumb, Nasum, and Cephalic Carnage.

An extremely good cd...,
This review is from: Terrifyer (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Ok this was the first Pig Destroyer cd I ever got (basically cuz it was the only one available). Now I had listened to Pig Destoyer before a bunch, and thought they were heavy, had a unique sound, and was just a breathe of fresh air from all the sound alikes that we hear on MTV (god I hate that station...) and on the radio. When I first popped this cd in I was excited as (blank) and after about the 11th song I felt that I was just in a new world, for the first couple of listens most people would say that they all sound alike and its all noise, but if your not an idiot you'll listen more and find that all the songs, although alike, are each their own little works of art, songs I feel that stick out the most in the begining are pretty in casts, thumbsucker, gravedancer, and lost cause (favorite song on cd). So if you are not satisfied with the new "radio friendly" mudvayne and slipknot then give this cd a listen, you won't be sorry.

Your neck'll be sore by the time "Terrifyer" is up,

Riff after crushing(yet headbangingly catchy) riff, throat shredding howls and blistering fast drums all smear together into the huge wall of noise that is Pig Destroyer. It never ceases to amaze me that this 3 piece can create such self-destructive and downright brutal amalgam of grind, thrash, punk and straight-up metal. They even incorporate doom metal on the second disc epic "Natasha" that while is quite a bit slower(it is doom metal keep in mind...) than the first disc it is every bit as intense. Albeit in a much creepier way especially when reading along with the six-page story/lyrics(!!!) provided in the liner notes. Speaking of intensity, as for the first disc...it goes for the throat like a rabid dog does right off the bat and never lets go, just sinking its canines deeper and deeper into your flesh as you manage a choked/gurgled blood-filled scream. And along the way samples from Popul Vuh, Georgy Ligiti, Luc Ferrari and Seclusion are used to effect!! Didn't think the boys in Pig Destroyer would have anything to do with krautrock or avant-garde classical composers now did you? Or even writer William S. Burroughs, as the quote "Everything is true, nothing is permitted" shows up on the last page of the pamphlet. If a fan of heavy music...I recommend you go out and get this...NOW ! Your neck might not thank you but your ears sure will...er...after the bleeding stops that is.

pig destroyer rules,

This album is a monumental accomplishment for an already amazing band. This album is short, to the point and rules. This is the future of grindcore. The swaying rhythms interspersed with all out tenacity, speed and aggression, make Terrifyer a ridiculously amazing listen. I mean god damn, that is some good music.

Pig Destroyer are no longer a grindcore band. They have an occasional grind riff show up here and there but barring that, this isn't a grind album. Now if you exist on some odd wavelength where you believe the quality of an album can be ascertained simply by what sub-sub-sub-genre of music it does or doesn't belong to (one Mr P.Haukas) then this album is a failure. I'd agree with him that this is a pretty worthless grind album, in much the same way that Coltrane was a pretty worthless piano player. However if you decide to approach Terrifyer as whatever it might be, then you might discover that Pig Destroyer have churned out a pretty damn impressive metal album here. Yeah their metal now, the riffs share more in common with the book of 80s thrash then anything spawned by napalm death or discordance axis. Their excellent riffs though, some of the best your likely to find this year. Track 14 in particular, carrion fairy, contains such an excellent pure headbanging riff that i almost fell out of my chair the first time I heard it.
Pig Destroyer are no longer a band that grindcore and grindcore only fans can call their own (and there are quite a few of them). They've morphed into an excellent crossover band on their last two albums that can and will cull fans from hardcore, metal, grind, and any other style of heavy music worth noting. To this I say good for them, it's not often a band can reach people in every spectrum considering how notoriously close-minded fans of heavy music tend to be. Black Sabbath did it. Slayer did it. Mastodon seem to be on their way to doing it. Pig Destroyer have the potential despite their considerably more aggressive tone then any of those bands, and I'd like to see them accomplish it as well. Excellent album

Better Than I Imagened,
This review is from: Terrifyer (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
This album is exactly where i hoped PxDx would go after "Prowler". Its strong, has a much better production, and the songwriting is far more superior to their previous efforts. We have interludes that swell bewteen and into tracks, we've got a KILLER 5.1 surround audio DVD included here....The only reason i gave it 4 stars and not 5, is that PxDx is missing some low end on some of its tracks- as they're a 3 piece with no bassist, this is inherent..but don't let this shy you away from this album- it will fit perfectly between the new Mastodon, and the new Converge. This has been in my cd player straight for 5 days. Well done!

Atmospheric Hyper Grind,

I can't be completely sure of this, but to my knowledge pig destroyer are first grind band to create concept albums. A brialliant idea considering the results, with the help of the lyrics sheet, the plot is already fleshed out before you get into the album. With a shot sample reminiscent of soundscapes, and music which -insert brutal/violent metaphor here-'s you, the listener finds his/herself completely engulfed in singer jr haye's broken psyche.
While so many prog albums cover very little ground as far as plot goes, this underground metal band takes us through a short story. Not to mention that it's beautifully written. Musically think a slightly sped up ADD slayer. Pig Destroyer are much more intellectual than most of the metal pack, but thankfully they are subtle about it, unlike many bands which go out of the way to show how technical, or cultured they are, pig destroyer creates a music which not only is specific to then, but crosses genre's to thrash, grind, and punk listeners.

PIG DESTROYER - Terrifyer
- This is some dark, twisted and evil music... yet I can't help but love it! PxDx is a 3 piece grind band that fuses many influences and has a sound so thick that it would consume many 5 pieces in their entirety. The blister guitar work of Scott Hull drives the charge while the rhythmically precise drumming of Brian Harvey holds it together. J.R. Hayes, who has my vote for the craziest lyricist vocalist since Today is the Day's Steve Austin, is in charge on the mic, pushing chaotic extreme vocals to new levels with a voice which is brutal yet still (at times) audible. So what you ask does PxDx sound like you might ask? Devastation! Destruction! Insanity! Chaos! Violence! The Apocalypse! ........For extreme metal fans only, this is a treat for the ears. Favorite Songs: Thumbsucker, Gravedancer, Carrion Fairy, Towering Flesh, and The Gentleman. -4.5 Stars IF YOU LIKED, AGREED OR APPRECIATED THIS. PLEASE CLICK YES FOR: "Was this review helpful?"

Superb,

The screams, drums, and riffs; all masterfully composed. This is one album that will have you headbanging in no time. Although Pig Destroyer is only a three man band, their assault is devestating. Unlike some grindcore bands that are full of repetitive 16th notes. Pig Destroyers riffs are catchy and memorable. Each song is griping. As you listen you wish the song would never end, but when it does (Although you can not always tell because the album flows from song to song magnificently) you are thrilled that it did, because the next song is just as good or better! This album and "Prowler in the Yard" (witch is equally good in my opinion) have launched Pig Destroyer into the ranks of my personal favorite bands.
If you are just getting into metal, you are not going to like this. You may, but your appreciation for it will not be as high. Let yourself get used to sounds that are more obscure over time. Then will you realize how great this band really is. |
