This here is some good ol' fashioned bluegrass. It makes your toes tap and you can feel the rhythm in your body.
There are a lot of up-tempo numbers on here, that showcase the incredible musicians and vocal talents of a slew of guest artists partnered with Tony on his banjo.
A perfect balance of ragin fast tunes with laid-back songs with folksy singing and soulful playing. Banjo, Fiddle, Guitar, Bass, Harmonica: all the makings of a great country bluegrass album.
If you are a fan of folk or bluegrass music, this album is a definite must on your list, as is anything Tony Trischka puts out!

A delightful variety on this album - because of the changing mix of guest artists and instruments there is never a dull moment nor is there a sense of sameness from one cut to another. However, the songs work as a beautifully-crafted and inspiring whole.

When I first bought this album I didn't really like it. It was so different from the Scruggs/Reno/Rice/Fleck stuff, I had trouble relating to it. The whole album is in a different musical and emotional vocabulary. I listened to it more and more, and now it stands alone in my collection.

The album is a journey into the roots of the banjo, exploring the cultural memories and landscapes - territories - that lie dormant within bluegrass.

This is not a 'historical re-enactment' album - there is some cutting-edge picking at times. But think of it as a view from the present into the imagined pasts that subtly influence where we are today. Listening to this album I feel as though I am transported to different times and places. African slave banza, witty folk rhymes, slow-paced sliding banjo, sophisticated double-banjo, wailing fiddle-tunes, and some completely new inventions. Each track is a journey into its own little world. Avoiding nostalgia, Trischka's technical mastery and fresh approach renders 'roots banjo' music that is powerfully evocative and still new.
