I'm not trained as a poet but I know good poetry when I read (hear it in the ear of the mind) and Robert Morgan's new volume of poems Terroir is a good collection. By the way, not being trained in French, Mr. Morgan says that Terroir means Dirt in the French tongue.

There are 78 poems in this collection and virtually all of them relate to home, country, family, and nature. Morgan is a truly talented novelist and historian, but he is a poet first. You can hear his love of language not only in his poetry but also in his fiction. I find that writers who are poets first are much better writers in their ability to use language in a playful manner than those who are not.

All of these poems are worthwhile but I have a few that are my favorites. Snakes in the Attic, pg. 81, (having had that situation before) seems to touch me most directly. Also, Flag on the Barn, pg. 90, speaks to love of country, family, and place. Confederate Graves at Elmira deals with the tragedy that prisoners of the Union Army suffered and one lone black custodian

"who dedicated twenty years
to finding out the name for each
Confederate grave and then had etched
the proper words on fields of stones,
to honor those lost far from home,
because it was the decent thing,
he answered neighbors' questioning.

I recommend all these poems highly, but my most favorite of all is The Years Ahead, pg. 57.

I highly recommend Terroir by Robert Morgan.

Peace to all.

A delightful book which one may pick up and put down as suits the day, always entertaining with intellectual insertions which challenge the thought process

This is a very good book! While the adage that one shouldn't judge a book by its cover rings true, this one has a brilliant cover design. I am very satisfied with the book and the seller.
