The Jefferson carrier task force joins another carrier battle group in the Middle East to support them after a sneak attack upon the aircraft carier United States. At the same time, Tombstone is tagged by the President to head up a new law enforcement unit to deal with militias in the northwestern U.S. U.N. Ambassador Wexler must deal with political machinations from Pakistan regarding the Middle East. And China is covertly assisting North Korea in preparations to invade the south.

Action! Drama! Suspense! As in all the Carrier books, they always start off with a bang. But if you've read the last few books and the accompanying reviews on them in this website, you know that there's been atrocious editing and glaring inconsistencies in the storylines. Well, I'm happy to report, that is not the case here. At least not like the last book. This was a fast paced, action packed novel, reminiscent of the earlier carrier books. The storyline with Tombstone was well written and, while I personally wasn't crazy about a story regarding domestic terrorism, it was an engaging plot that carried me through the entire book. But . . .

the problem with unresolved subplots is still present. The China/North Korea storyline introduced in the first quarter of the book and then not mentioned again. In another subplot, the admiral of the carrier United States abandons his crew after an air attack against a bio-weapons site that threatens to engulf the task force with a deadly airborne toxin. Suddenly we cut to the book's eventual climactic battle, pitting the Jefferson against Iraqi jets and mini-subs without ever finding out what happens to the carrier United States.

I was planning to give the book 4 stars but subtracted one for the continuing problem of not being able to tie up all the loose ends.

This one was a good read. Like the previous reviewer I was concerned about unresolved plot lines, but not to twitch, the cover says it's volume #1 of a two part story, so hopefully they'll all resolve themselves in the next book. It was trying to end like a cliffhanger with the bad guy surviving. The usual final air battle seemed out of context, all of a sudden the air group is bombing Iraq (or is it Iran or is it both?) for no apparent reason. There could have been a smoother transition to the next book.

There's a few editing errors like usual and once he talked about a backseater in an F-15 which would be unusual. I liked his definition of CIA in the glossary.
