Terror at London Bridge (aka Bridge Across Time) [VHS]

This definitely is one of the cheesiest made-for-TV suspense/horror movies, but I absolutely love it. That's probably because it was filmed in my hometown of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, when I was in the 5th grade, and one of the few things that has made Havasu famous for something other than out-of-control Spring Break-ers. Plus, David Hasselhoff still had a modicum of respectability in 1985.

This made-for-TV fare is about what one would expect with David Hasselhoff and a cast of less-than-well-known actors/actresses.

The movie begins in a foggy London, in the late 19th century. Jack the Ripper is interrupted in his dastardly deeds by his intended victim's screams and the handy presence of a bobbie or two. The police quickly give chase, with a horde of people in tow (About 40 or so...how did a mob gather so quickly, in a minute or two?...must have been a slow night in London town). They chase him to the middle of the London bridge; he's stopped from going across by a mob on the OTHER side of the bridge (she must have had a scream like an air-raid siren...do you know how long the bridge is?). To avoid capture, our caped murderer jumps in the Thames. In his haste, he knocks off a capstone from the bridge (must have been weak cement). We don't see Jack again, but see the stone floating gently down through the water (don't stones sink pretty fast?).

Next scene, at the transplanted London Bridge over Lake Havasu on the Colorado River in 1990 or so. Whiny wife wants to walk across the bridge, the night before the re-dedication of the bridge (somehow, they found the capstone at the bottom of the river, and decide to ship it, along with the Mayor of London, to America). Hubby is too tired, so this provocatively-dressed woman decides to walk across alone, in the middle of the night (victims are always so bright!). She pricks her finger, a drop of her blood falls on the capstone, and the blood begins to sizzle like a over-cooked steak! Soon, a shape forms, and female DNA or no, our boy Jack is back! Complete with cape! Up to his old tricks!

This time our unlucky American tourist's screams don't bring anyone to her aid. Hubby reports her missing at noon the next day. He apparently doesn't realize she didn't come to the the hotel room, and the cad has fallen asleep without her! He reports her missing to cop David Hasslehof on the bridge, just in time to make a scene. He's puttered around for 12 hours, now he can't wait a few minutes more to file a report.

Hasslehof plays a cop who is in trouble with the political leaders of the town, because he doesn't 'play by the book'. Stop me if you've heard that one a million times before.

The rest of the movie is just as bad. I don't know if the boys on Mystery Science Theater dissed this film, but it's about on par with those lousy movies they have so much fun with.

OK to watch to see how bad it is, but, really, don't your tires need to be rotated or something?

Terror at London Bridge was really cool to me. It was definitely Michael Knight's character for David Hasselhoff but also a nice refreshing breath of fresh air with Randy Mantooth as his partner. Two talented men coming from different tv eras coming together to solve a murder mystery. The plot really had me fooled. I thought the odd looking man in the black suit was the killer but in fact he's the one trying to help and the young man was the evil one. Who would have seen it coming? The best part of the movie is the last action scene. That to me helped bring it all together. I also really liked David's scene where he talked about the shooting in Chicago when he killed a 14 year old male. He really showed his true feelings during this scene and this is what people want to see. We understand that acting is well acting but when they put their own heart and soul into their character it just makes for something special. I would recommend this movie if you like a good mystery thriller and also if you were a fan of the 1980's tv, style, and fashion.

I have seen "Terror At London Bridge"/"Bridge Across Time"/"The Arizona Ripper", and it is mind-blowing badly done. The plot: the old London Bridge is moved from the English capital city to Arizona where it is rebuilt. AMAZINGLY, the spirit of Jack the Ripper (London prostitute serial killer, Aug.-Nov.1888) is locked in the stones of the newly erected bridge, and is hungry for more victims. A mish-mash of gore and bore. Not for anyone with an ounce of common sense.

Personally after seeing the same movie re-done I thought that the movie could not be that good. Then again what do I know. The cast surpised me with the freshness. David and Stepfanie complimented each other nicely. The producer and director should be pleased with their work. I just wish this video was avalible so I can add it to my collection.
