Ellen and her younger brother get a certificate to stay at the zoo for a night. They are so excited, but there is a mistake in the planning and the children and up staying at the zoo by themselves. Meanwhile another person thought it would be nice to hide in the zoo. He is Tony Haymes, a criminal who escaped from jail. He doesn't think anyone will be in the zoo at night and he can carry out his plan of kidnapping a baby monkey for ransom. He needs the money so he can run away to Mexico. Corey, who is Ellen's brother, loves to tell stories that are not true. Once at the zoo they see the criminal breaking into a snack bar. This is when they know somthing is not right. Ellen finally gets Corey vack to the tent to sleep. Corey wanted to play detective and watch the criminal. In the middle of the night Ellen wakes up to find that her brother is not laying right beside her. She goes out to look for him. Corey has gone to find the monkey cage, which is exactly where Tony is. The monkey runs away and Tony sees Corey. He decides to hold him for ransom instead. Finally Ellen finds them and she gets held captive too. Ellen eventually uses her power to comunicate with animals to save them and get Tony put back in jail. I liked this book because it was easy to read and had some funny parts in it. It also had some suspenceful parts in it. This book was hard to put down. I thought it was very interesting.

Terror at the Zoo,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Terror at the Zoo (Paperback)
The book is called Terror at the Zoo. The author is Peg Kehret. The main characters are Ellen & her brother Corey. The plot of the story is that ellen and Corey got a gift certificate for a camp out at the local zoo. Their grandparents will be taking them because their parents will be out of town. Days before, their grandma breaks her foot. Their parents say they will try to make it home to go with them. When that day does comes, her parents are not there. Ellen thinks that her parents will be home soon, so she writes a note, and her and her brother take a cab to the zoo. They wait for hours and their parents still don't show up. So they go into the zoo were their camp site is. They wait more and decide to explore the zoo. Afterall, they have never been in the zoo at night. When they are exporing they come across a escaped prisoner braking into the concession stand. The crook spots them, and now they are on the run for their lives. They encounter him many times. The zoo elaphants end up being the ones who save their lives. the police come, and the crook is arrested. The setting takes place in the zoo in modern day time. The theme of this story is courage and love. It is this because, they have to be courageous to survive. They also have to stick together, and work together to survive. I really liked this book because it kept you on your feet the whole time.

Terror at the zoo,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Terror at the Zoo (Paperback)
I liked this book because of many reasons, and their was only one reason I didnt like it. The one reason I didnt enjoy the book is because the ending cut off before explaining how it ended for all of the characters. Overall though I thought that this book was very good. One of the reasons I chose this book and a reason I liked it is because it is an adventure and it is excitig because they are always trying to escape. Another reason that I liked the book is that I like the author and I think that she did a good job writing the book, that is one of the things that made it interesting.I think that the best part of the book is when the elephant saved the children from the criminal and they were able to capture him. If the elephant wouldnt have helped them then they might not have lived. After they escaped they were able to get the police who then put the man back in jail. I think that the best story element was the setting. The author did an excellent job of picking a setting and she described it very clearly, she explained about everything at the zoo. She also did a good job with the conflict because it is something that could actually happen in real life with kids.

Reviewing An Interesting And Capturing Book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Terror at the Zoo (Paperback)
What if you were locked in a zoo without your parents? Sound cool? Now what if you were locked in a zoo with an escaped criminal with a knife and no adults around to help? That's what Ellen and her little brother Cory have to deal with in Terror at the Zoo by author Peg Kehret. A prize of an overnight sleep-over for four is auctioned off and Ellen and Cory's grandparents find it a fine idea as a gift for their granddaughter's birthday. But when Ellen and Corey's mom and dad's flight home gets delayed, and their grandmother is in the hospital because of an illness, there is no one to take care of the kids. Still, they decide they are not going to miss out on a great adventure and decide to go to the zoo sleep-over by themselves. The children look for the zoo security guard, but he is no where to be found. To make things even worse, the only phone available is outside the locked zoo. With no way to reach a phone or find help, can Cory and Ellen escape from this hostile criminal, or are they, like the zoo animals themselves, trapped inside a fenced, barb-wired prison? Will Ellen's science project of communicating with animals telepathically help her while she's locked in the zoo? Will Ellen and Corey be able to hide from the escaped criminal? Will their parents arrive it time to rescue them? This really is a night of terror at the zoo! This book keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time just waiting to find out what will happen next. If you like suspense, action, and fiction, I would highly recommend this book! I really enjoyed it and I hope you will too.

Kids will love it. Parents will yawn.,
This review is from: Terror at the Zoo (Paperback)
Here's the bottom line:
Buy the book for your kids -- not for you. Adult may roll their eyes at this plot which is so implausible that the author spends many pages just trying to make it possible. However, the book has kidnapping, a scary criminal and animals! It's a sure-fire winning combination for kids. Nothing wrong with that! Just be happy your child is reading.
