Here's the thing: Band either evolve or stagnate. The former usually is termed as "maturing" which in this genre typically means that the band waters down their sound.
Bear vs. Shark has straddled that line quite well, I think. This CD is not the same as "Right Now..." but it's still B vs. S. The songs are a little more structured, the sound is still there and if this album grabs new listeners it's because it's just a great release from a great band. And I'm finding that it's the nuances of this release that are so intriguing. It's rare to have a hard-rock act that has details that are like a good piece of writing. Re-readable with new details emerging each time. The best part is that the next album can and probably will be a 45-degree turn in some other direction. I would not be surprised by an acoustic album or a rock-opera with a full orchestra and choir. Do NOT underestimate the importance of a band that has a mind and soul. The result is an organic, breathing entity that relates to the listener and vice versa. Ian McKaye once alluded to the fact that one of Fugazi's goals is to provide a product that makes both the band AND the audience comfortable. This type of understanding is rare these days, especially in a commercially oriented medium. But I feel that Bear Vs. Shark fits this mold of a group that has some sort of relationship with its listeners. Go for it and participate.

Instead of saying "recommended for Mars Volta fans" it should have said At the drive-in. I would say that is the closest comparison they could have made. Very good music, but not as diverse sounding as ATDI (considering they could go from salsa to straight screaming in a second).

because they were AMAZING. This album as well as their first (Right now, you're in the best of hands) are a class all by themselves. Both albums are worth a listen if your tired of mainstream/cookie cutter music.

bear vs shark is one of the only bands in the last five years that hit the spot for me.I bought terrorhawk and was completly in love! I later purchased "right now"and since then I've seen them live twice and met all of the members. This was in my mind the tip of the iceberg for a great group of musicians. THis is for Any lover of just a goddamn great band. So I wont go through a list of comparable bands to try to explain there sound and passion. The proof is in the pudding! As of Dec 21,2005 Bear vs Shark is no longer.Dont passby on these albums!

I was browsing around one day and came across a group titled Bear vs Shark, and the name just sounded awesome so I decided to try out this band, noticing they were signed to Equal Vision like Coheed, me being a huge Coheed fan. I listened to the CD for the first time and felt like this was something different but then put it away. I put it back in again a while later to give it another chance and it really started to grow on me. Now I cant stop listening to it, it is just so energetic and fast and I really like the singers voice. This band would seem very amazing live. My favorite song would have to be: "Heard Iron Bug, 'They're Coming To Town'", I just really like the way this guy screams. Overall this is a very different band that everybody should listen to if you are as tired as me of all the crap out there.

HONESTLY you cant compare bearvsshark to anybody today. passionate, honest and a great live show that leaves the rest of the performers, including their fans, looking in awe. Lyrics are amazing leaving fans with a sense of empowerment and thought. Three of the five musicians switch between two guitars, a bass guitar, keyboard and maracas, yet they keep a cohesive sound throughout their ablums. Jumping into crowds, repositioning lighting and even breakdancing, bearvsshark puts on an amazing and flawless show.
I read the other reviews, and it pissed me off. People were buying the cd without listening to them and then complaining they didnt sound like the other bands amazone compared them to. bottomline: breath taking/refreashing (in a world of cutting your wrists and blacking your eyes, dissonant chords and breakdowns... bearvsshark stands alone)

Bear Vs Shark Bring Back What Was Needed,

Review by Kyle Crawford:
For some in the indie circles of the world, indie-rock has never quite gotten over the loss of their gods like Murder City Devils and At The Drive-In. After the release of Bear vs. Shark's first album, Right Now You're in the Best of Hands, many claimed to see a possible fill for the void left by their predecessors. Terrorhawk, the band's second full length release, extinguishes all doubts and speculation. From the first humming remnants of sound on the first song until the very last note played, Terrorhawk takes the listener on a wonderfully crafted, unique journey equipped with highs, lows, mellow songs, intense songs, and even a saxophone or two. One of the most impressive things about the album is the fact that there are fifteen complete songs that actually have an impact the entire way through; there is no let up. Listeners will definitely feel an enormous sense of relief, as the weight of mediocre releases as of late will be lifted off their shoulders after listening to Bear vs. Shark's latest effort. This flawless record shows that in terms of indie-rock, those circles of people have something to hold onto again, and something to look forward to in the future.

Bear vs. Shark. Who won?,

I was fortunate enough to see these guys play live this past Friday night and they were awesome. On my way out of the show the doorman asked, "Who won?". At first I just laughed at his clever sense of humor, ( get it? Bear VERSUS shark - who won?) then I realized that the winner is EVERYONE who buys this amazing record! Passionate and powerful, eclectic and energetic, there aren't enough adjectives to describe how great this is. TERRORHAWK covers the entire spectrum, its loud and agressive, while also being beautiful and grooving. It's poetry, it's art, it's everything that makes music worth listening to. Infact I dare you to JUST listen, Terrorhawk demands participation! This will inspire you to get up and unlock your own creativity, wheather it be playing music or drawing/painting or writing or what ever. Feel free to do an interperative dance, you know you want to.
CAUTION: Fans of Fugazi and At the Drive-In; Bear vs. Shark may become your new favorite band.

Bear vs. Shark is an amazing band that came out of Michigan. Although they've recently broke up, their 2 CDs are considered some of the best. I am reviewing their 2nd and last CD - Terrorhawk. Terrorhawk features 15 amazing tracks. The reason I love Bear vs. Shark is their original sound. Their singer is able to both sing and scream and he does it very well. Some of the best songs on the CD are "Catamaran," "Six Bar Phrase Hey Hey," and "The Great Dinosaurs With Fifties Section." Inspired by Classic Rock and Punk, Bear vs. Shark have their own unique sound that is hard to describe. I highly recommend you check out their website or myspace to get a sample of their music. Overall I'd highly recommend "Terrorhawk" to any Post-Hardcore or Indie fan. You will not be disappointed.

A Wonderful Journey,
This review is from: Terrorhawk (Audio CD)
This record will take you on a trip. I was a huge fan of "Right now..." and this certainly doesnt let down. In fact, I would say it is a small step up from the last release. The songs have a little more depth and sound more layered. I will give my thoughts on each track
Catamaran: A high energy song, gets your blood moving for the rest of the album. The end is very catchy, i had it stuck in my head for weeks 5,6 Kids: Amazing song. The guitars are great and the lyrics aree great. "Dog eats a man...Man eats a dog..." 6 Bar Phrase Hey Hey: A short blast of energy, waking you from the awesomeness of 5,6 kids Great Dinosaurs With 50s Section: The voice is this song is filled with so much emotion Baraga Embankment: A mellow groove. Definatly shows why they claim motown as an influence. I love it. Uses some sax, adding layers Entrance of the Elected: Starts with grinding guitars, then shifts to a cheery bass. Great stuff. Clever, catchy lyrics like "I do declare, said the governor. Lets get these people moving faster" Seven Stop Hold Restart: I can see why they get the "restart" part. It's very stop and go. Once again, a cheery bass. "Baby if you want me you can swallow me bones and all" What a Horrible Night For a Curse: What can i say? Another great, mellow song. Its quite sad sounding. The grooveo of it will pull you in. "There's gotta be something underneath" Out Loud Hey Hey: Another relativley quick blast. It's great stuff India Foot: I'm guessing an experimental track, it feels like it's melting my brain Antwan: It sounds simple, but its very complex. I like the "hey hey"s I F**ked Your Dad: Strange Title. Spacy, head trippy goodness. Heard Iron Bug "They're Coming to Town": Also kind of Spacy, its got a kind of spoken word bit, but its also stop and go. Song About Old Roller Coaster: A sad song, it slowly rolls out. Rich Old People Say F**k Yeah, Hey Hey: I'm beginning to see a pattern with these 'hey hey's. Anyway, twangy guitars are the highlight of the closer. It's a great way to end it, though I might have picked one of the mellower tracks Overall a great album. I can't get enought of it. Try as I might, I just can't imitate the singer's voice.. |
