Editorial Reviews

Review

“This book's major strengths are its content, which is excellent; its organization, which is logical; and the fact that it devotes considerable attention to counterterrorist strategies and operations.”– Nicholas J. Steneck, The Ohio State University

This book has taught me a great deal about terrorism.

It gives a good understanding of Terrorism today, its development and its interaction with the public and media.

It reads ok, but when you try to interact with it by adding notes or highlighting...it crashes.

The latest edition of this book like a couple of the previous editions is fairly good for describing Islamic terrorism and talking about counterterrorism policies. It is not really a book about terrorism in the 21st century, however, since it lacks any mention of the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka or the Naxalites in India. The only mention of the latest Mumbai attack fails to provide any background as to why that city was chosen for the attack. The book is too limited, which is very disappointing, since some of the earlier editions (1999 for example) were much more comprehensive.

So far I can't complain about the book. My professor is a retired US Ambassador and the info in the book seems to be right in line with what he is teaching.

This book is good. It gives a good understanding of Terrorism today, its development and its interaction with the public and media. First this is not a theory book. You are not getting in depth analysis of why terrorist do what they do, there thoughts, or an unbiased look at whether terrorism is any different than war civilized nations take part in. It uses common terms like Rouge States that are sometimes deemed more propaganda then academic. But the book does well in teaching students a much deeper understanding of the scope of terrorism through the eyes of Western World ideas. The best chapter is absolutely on the media and it interaction with Terrorist. It gives a good look at modern media and there responsibility in covering terrorism. Terrorism is after all theater, it kills less than many other problems we have in the world today, but the idea that it can reach audiences Worldwide in seconds, and targets civilians makes it very powerful.

I gave the book this rating because it was very knowledgable in the degree field I am pursuing but was out dated material not to Amazons fault but to my college. But the book is a keeper and provided much insight. Thanks you.
