Terry Bowness CD - is a "breath of fresh air" to jazz!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Terry Bowness (Audio CD)
The debut outing of jazz pianist Terry Bowness is truly a breath of fresh air for fans of instrumental jazz music. Each composition and arrangement on the disc is both thoughtful and spontaneously infectious jazz! My favorite piece on the Aardvark Records release is "two thirty three", an odd-meter work that is also very musical in the effect it has on the listener. Unlike many pieces that utilize this type of inference of rhthmic periodicity, "two thirty three" does not encumber the listener with the fact that the compositon is "complicated" rhythymically. You just hear the sincere effect of great playing and good music! Also of note on this recording is the contemporary arrangement and treatment of John Coltrane's "Niama". The kid respectfully pays tribute to the jazz tradition through this selection. All of the selections on this project are worth a couple of hearings at least and should be a part of most any serious jazz collection. Look for more work from this recording artist. Remember the name: Bowness - pronounced with a long 'o' sound! Buy this CD, you'll really enjoy what you hear...

This CD will be loved by musicians and non-musicians alike. The non-musicians will enjoy the melodies and the emotions each piece conveys. The musicians will very much enjoy Terry's fascination with SOUND - which chords and which notes work with the other instruments and within the context of the whole phrase. I remember playing with someone who would sit at a piano and just PLAY, just experiment with notes, chords, chord progressions. He'd play 2-3 notes together and say, "Listen to this - it's not quite right is it? But now..." and he'd play those same notes but in between two other chords, "It works! Isn't that beautiful? Just listen to that." THIS is why musicians will love this CD - because they'll enjoy repeatedly listening very closely in order to find those unique musical moments that can only be created by someone who loves and appreciates SOUND and all it encompasses. I definitely recommend this CD to anyone and everyone.

Nice stuff. Really good keyboard and guitar. I've listened to at least a hundred times and still love it. Some of it reminds me of the german lable, ECM during the 80's.
