Product Description

Tesla Effect begins with Tex Murphy -- the down-on-his-luck gumshoe in the post-apocalyptic future -- regaining consciousness on the fire escape next to his office with a head wound and an injection mark on his arm. With the last seven years of his life wiped from memory, the private eye has no choice but to figure who was behind the mysterious attack and why.

Tex Murphy is the last of the hard-boiled gumshoe detectives living in dystopian post-World War III San Francisco in the 2040s. Tex is an honest and good-natured private investigator with a penchant for bourbon, cigarettes and getting himself into trouble. He runs his P.I. (and dance instructor) business from his apartment/office on the top floor of the Ritz Hotel, located on Chandler Avenue in Old San Francisco. In stark contrast to the sparkling, futuristic New San Francisco, Old San Francisco is a run-down part of town known for its high concentration of Mutants -- a section of the population disfigured by post-war nuclear fallout. Tex has found several friends and allies among the Mutants on Chandler Avenue. His talents as a detective are matched only by his knack for putting his foot in his mouth and bumbling his way into the path of danger. However, using his wits, creativity and a bit of luck, Tex has managed to save the world on several occasions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long time fan extremely pleased May 8, 2014
Tesla Effect is Sixth in the Tex Murphy series- one that died a premature death in the late nineties. Fans have been desperate for a new Tex adventure for more than 15 years, and all that waiting has finally paid off.

Was it possible to make a 90s style FMV detective game in a post Call of Duty world? Would the shoestring budget hamper the development of game in line with its predecessors? Did the developers still have that spark? Is Chris Jones still Tex?

Yes. Oh, yes.

Tex is back, baby!
Play this game!

Even if you don't play it- buy it so they'll make me another one! Muwahahaha! (Wait did I just type that? (oops)).

5.0 out of 5 stars A phenominal trip to adventure's origins May 9, 2014
By Jake W.
If you were fortunate enough to play the original Tex Murphy games when they were new, than you already know what to expect;
Ground breaking adventures that continually pushed technology forward with the lovable charm that only a real FMV actor can portray.
The folks at Big Finish Games have poured so much care into crafting a game as a love letter to the fans of a dying genre, that they aren't even charging a premium for it. Tesla Effect embodies everything good about the video game industry. This isn't a yearly shooter that comes out every year like clockwork so that the money is always flowing. This is a game that a group of people in love with the story and craft worked on with one goal: Will the players enjoy this?
And it shows. It shows in every frame you see.
While this isn't the best looking game out there and someone could easily complain that it is technically inferior to a lot of games out there using the Unity engine. That would be missing the forest for the trees and not looking at what Tex Murphy is all about, the people, the experience. How could you not like having Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo from MST3k) as your wise cracking side kick? Even the most jaded will get a chuckle at the endless pop culture references and general silliness that REAL actors bring to the table.
FMV has gotten a bad rap over the years, and mostly deservedly so, because not everyone can weave a character driven FMV adventure with detective sloothing as gracefully as the men and women behind Tex Murphy. This isn't Night Trap people.

To sum up, I can't recommend this game enough. Even if you aren't a fan of adventure games, I urge you to try Tesla Effect.
Don't let the low price fool you either, you'll get more out of this experience then just about any $60 game on the market today.

Tex lives!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure Games Are Back From The Dead May 9, 2014
Recently we have seen a lot of re-imaginings of classic games, Thief springs to mind, but when you finally get the game you find it doesn't really have a lot to do with the originals except the name.

The Tesla Effect is not one of those re-imaginings. Its a proper modern version sequel to the original great Tex Murphy games of the 90s. They have updated the graphics and the controls to be on par with modern games but at its heart this is a real 1990s classic FMV adventure game.

I've always been a fan of adventure games and for a long long time it was very hard to find a good one. They died out in the late 90s as FPS became the all mighty gaming genre With the rise of Kickstarter my favorite genre seems to be springing back to life.

The story is deep and the puzzles are fun. The acting is probably the best I've seen in one of these type of games but there is still that campy charm that there was in the old games. This is no Christopher Nolan Dark and gritty reboot man of steel reboot. Everything that made the original games so appealing is hear in spades.

If you like and miss the great adventure games of the past you own it to yourself to try this out and if you are a newcomer to the genre why not play a game where you have to use your mind and not just your reactions to progress in the story.

Yes Tex is back and so are adventure games and it was surely worth the wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tex Murphy has still got it !!! May 18, 2014
This game is so awesome in so many ways. It`s as if the whole gang from the original games never aged.
Obviously more modern interface and help system. Everything is very intuitive regarding items and interaction.
I have waited so very long for Tex to appear before his loyal fans. This game exceeded my expectations and had lots of surprises.
The game is worth so much more then the few dollars they are getting for it. If your on the fence don`t be. Bite the bullet for Tex.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh face on an old friend May 29, 2014
I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. It's old Tex with a new speeder, new friends, new locations, and as always a new mystery. Excellent FMV and conversation choices. This game has 3 major paths and 5 endings. The game UI makes it easy to move seamlessly from one location to another. A great adventure for fans of adventure games.

Yeah, the coolest PI of the radioactive future is back!!! As a long time Tex Murphy fan I bought this game without even thinking whether it would be worth it, as I was so happy that a new game had come out. Paying under 20 bucks for a Tex Murphy adventure is definitely an awesome price for the many hours that it usually takes to solve it. Just because this is a crowd funded game, it is not - contrary to what I feared - shorter, of less quality, or less entertainment. No, absolute not! The hours of movie sequences look much better (installation was 16.7GB or so), the story "didn't want to end" and continued longer and longer than I expected, and it is really entertaining. This actually might be the funniest of the adventures. That was at least my impression.

Every Tex fan will love this newest game, because they stuck to their roots. Chris Jones seems again to be the mastermind behind it all and of course plays Tex again. Tex starts as usual in Chandler Ave, that no Tex fan wants to miss. Complains about missing star power (like no Michael York this time like in Overseer) are not really helpful, because this is crowd funded and my "Tex stars" are back, namely the steady characters from Chandler Ave. I think especially the good soul Louie was played by the same gentleman as usual. I don't want to see Tom Cruise in that role... Same goes especially also for the graphics. It does not look like your newest ego shooter, in fact when you run around in Chandler Ave, it looks mostly like it looked years ago. And that is great! It just took me a few seconds to walk around and the thought came up: "Yes, I am back in town!" It is really rare for a game that you feel like "coming home", but they hit it on the spot.

Those who don't know Tex yet should give it a try.

This was a fun game to play. It's like an interactive movie. It isn't very long, but it's not very expensive either.
