Excellent classroom resource,

This review is from: Tessellations : The History and Making of Symmetrical Designs (Paperback)
I agree with the positive reviews. My students and I have been totally engrossed with the book. The illustrations are superior; the writing clear. What I like best is how the needs of young readers are met through the repetition and reinforcement of concepts. The guides are easy to read and follow. My fourth graders are able to independently produce beautiful and complex rotations and reflections. Another thing I like is the presentation of art history with its references to tessellations in quilts, floors, and architecture. The reference to MC Escher's work is amazing! Many of my students have purchased their own copies of this book and it is now their activity of choice when free time is available in class. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Its only drawback is that is not available in hardback.

Good book for kids,

This book is written and illustrated for children, although adults could learn from it as well. The underlying math concepts and vocabulary of tesselations are difficult to teach. This book translates the concepts into understandable language. For visual learners, the illustrations make tessellation making much easier.I wouldn't buy this book to read cover to cover, but it is a good resource especially for anyone who teaches math or art.

The pictures and story are fun and informative. My elementary students love it. Use this book with the video, "Tessellations: How to Create Them" for real success in the classroom. My students can make rotations and reflections with ease. This is something they have never been able to achieve in the past. If you are a classroom teacher, I recommend buying the book.

Symmetry Made Simple,
By Adam Schechter (Brooklyn, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tessellations : The History and Making of Symmetrical Designs (Paperback)
This is an excellent book, breaking down the history and process of creating tessellations. The book is written in a clear, simple fashion which allows children as well as adults to understand how tessellations work , and includes step by step instructions for making them yourself. Jim McNeill's artwork is delightful. His colorful illustrations make the text fun to read, while the original tessellations are wonderfully designed and humorous. I highly recommend this book anyone looking to explore the world of tessellations!

For the first time I was able to figure out how to make tessellations. I learned a lot! I had fun making tessellations. Now I want a book that shows how to make really good tessellations with a computer.

I teach art and this book is perfect for teaching kids step by step how to do tesselations. The characters they use are great for helping the kids remember the different types of tesselations.
