Format: Hardcover
The book presents itself as a history of Consumers Union, but instead of being comprehensive, it gives three stories. The stories are that Consumers Union / Consumer Reports product testing contributed significantly to the recognition that cigarettes are harmful to health, that safety belts and other features make travel by car much safer, and that radioactive fallout from nuclear weapons testing is a health hazard.

The book is relevant today because the cases it present are so bizarre in retrospect. Today everyone takes it for granted that tobacco, car collisions, and atomic bombs are dangerous, but in the book, the context of history presented suggests that Consumers Union had to develop persuasive scientific tests, advocacy messages, and publications to convince Americans that these issues were worth addressing.

It is worth remembering that public perception can change quickly and dramatically. The cases in this book are strange and it is definitely true that in the recent past people had very different beliefs about safety and dangers in the world.
