This review is from: Test Shot Starfish (Audio CD)
I don't know if it's because they have "starfish" in their name - this music always reminds me of something from under water. OR maybe rummaging around in the basement for something you've lost, only to discover some OTHER wonderful junk and forget what you were rummaging for in the first place. Beats and textures. Beats and textures. This genre is still a favorite place to 'hang out.' Beats and textures with repeating clips of odd phrases. Repeating clips of odd phrases. Allow me make some obvious comparisons: Vladislav Delay also does this genre well - or WAIT I know... Bill Nelson mined this groove (a whole helluva lot) back in the 90s. (After his days with BeBopDeluxe). I still have huge space on the archive shelves devoted to those Nelson CDs and I cannot bring myself to part with them. Now, listening to Test Shot Starfish (which even sounds like one of Nelson's titles) I am thinking to myself "heeey now doesn't this sounds familiar..." Repeating clips of odd phrases.
Test Shot Starfish makes great music for thinking, working, spacing out or doing something phun with your love pal and generally just chillin'. You won't be dancing yo assoff - but you might be noddin' you head. IF you ever enjoyed Bill Nelson's wonderful double CD: "Chance Encounters in The Garden of Lights" - which is (sadly) out-of-print, I think, T.S.S. may fill some of the gap. Did I mention Beats and textures? Nice ambient stuff. VERY nice. (*No one paid me to write this. I volunteered as a public service. As you were.)
