Steve Ashley stands "The Test of Time",

This review is from: Test of Time (Audio CD)
This potted history of his solo work should be enough to clue you in to Steve Ashley's brilliance, and may even convince you that, overall, his substantial talent has remained hidden for far too long. Six albums in 30 years is hardly prolific, but each carefuly built into a collection that reflected his notable achievements as both a songwriter and performer.Whilst most artists' back catalogue has been cynically and badly exploited, this 17-track chronologically-sequenced compilation is a perfect introduction (or re-acquaintance) to Steve Ashley and his music. Aptly, the material contained within the collection does stand the test of time. - taken from across the breadth of his long career, the songs continue to make a deep musical and emotional connection. "Test of Time" is a 17-song compendium of self-penned material taken from four albums, the two incredibly rare CND "Demo tapes" cassettes, a Hokey Pokey charity collection and one previously unreleased track. This exquisite package is rounded off by Steve's informative song notes and a glowingly astute testimonial from Karl Dallas, all housed in a lovely self-portrait painting on the sleeve. It's not only great for nostalgists, but the unreleased 'Over there In Paradise', being representative of his next studio album, indicates that he is approaching a return to both studio and the road in fine fettle. This deeply impressive folk-rock record is not ulike a pot of gold found at the end of the rainbow. |
