This review is from: New Testament Cities in Western Asia Minor (Paperback)
Interested in early Christianity? Or perhaps you're visiting any of these cities soon? Then you need to read this book.
Edwin Yamauchi, a famous biblical scholar, writes very short books--this one is only about 150 pages. He has chapters on all the main cities from the New Testament--Assos, Pergamum, Laodicea, etc. All the 7 cities mentioned in Revelation are included. Yamauchi covers all the latest information about the cities. He also discusses the historical and biblical background of each city, giving details about the cities that would usually not be mentioned in a general history book. Then he reveals the modern archeological finds. Some of the things I learned about Ephesus: a colossal head of Mark Antony was discovered in the upper civic agora in the 1970s. "During the reign of Vespasian a famous astrologer named Barbillus persuaded the emperor to sponsor a series of games known as the Barbillea" (P 91) in Ephesus. Although gladiatorial games were popular in "all the Greco-Roman cities...they were denounced by Christians" (P 94). A menorah carved into the steps leading to the library of Celsus testify to the presence of Jews. And, in 1955, "a cavelike chapel on Mount Koressos...had graffiti...showing evidence that Paul was invoked as a saint at Ephesus" (P 111).
