Butch Morris is a unique phenomonen. In the 1970s and early 1980s he was a leading cornetist in the new jazz that he and his colleagues -- Henry Threadgil, David Murray, Don Pullen, etc. -- were developing in New York. Born then as well, and now Morris' trademark, were his "Conductions" or conducted improvisations, by which he transformed the conductor from mere interpreter to creator. With the conductor now become "composer at the podium," Morris established his audacity and brilliance by bringing together previously unheard of musical combinations in stellar ensembles as well. Here you will find renowned improvisors, classical musicians, ethnic musicians, turn table virtuosos, and all manner of other creators of sonic "events" focused on the maestro, Butch Morris, as he moulds the musical moment. There is no question that Butch Morris' oeuvre represents the opening of a new path for orchestral music into the 21st century. To date, Morris has performed upwards of 70 conductions. The box set is a must! Included in the box set as well is an important booklet written by Butch Morris and his long-time collaborator, the poet and writer Allan Graubard. Together they describe, explain, and explore the method and its resonances internationally.
