Book Description

October 31, 2006
No one is better than Kate Bennett at playing by the rules–because no one has quite her knack for running into bad luck. Orphaned while in college, Kate handled her loss by graduating with honors and acquiring a secure job and a dependable boyfriend. But now, with her thirtieth birthday around the corner, Kate decides it’s time to shake things up. She quits her job, breaks up with her long-term boyfriend, and U-Hauls it across the country for her first year at Tulane Law School. Too bad nothing in the Big Easy is quite so easy….

Before she knows it, Kate finds her life turned upside down by a notoriously sadistic professor, a larger-than-life new boss–and two interested men who are sure that she’s The One…. But can either of the men in her life really know Kate, when she’s just getting to know herself? In a year of self-discovery, the most important lesson Kate may learn is that to change your luck, sometimes you have to change your mind–including what you thought was your dream.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Kate Bennett, 29, is ready to chuck her staid life in Ithaca for law school at pre-Katrina Tulane, but a moving van mishap leaves her unprepared for the first day of the notorious professor Hoffman's criminal law class. His cringe-inducing close questioning leaves Kate a laughingstock, but not in the eyes of her quickly convened study group: the dramatic, blonde goddess Lexi; the married and affable Jen; goofy Addison; 19-year-old phenom Dana; and sexy Nick, who lives in her building. The situation with Hoffman escalates; ex-boyfriend Graham shows up to woo her back. After a brief respite, Hoffman unexpectedly takes over one of Kate's classes second semester, and things get progressively more complicated: Kate spends an intimate night with Nick, has to pick up the pieces when Dana starts to crack, and uncovers a dramatic secret about Jen—all of which forces Kate to examine her commitments in love and law. Gaskell (She, Myself & I) relieves the high school–like atmosphere with sharp dialogue and various forays into New Orleans culture. But the cast is largely schematic (even in crisis), and Kate's own dilemmas (law review, anyone?) are not compelling enough to raise the stakes. (Oct. 31)

4.0 out of 5 stars Gaskell is always a must read, January 2, 2007
By
This review is from: Testing Kate (Paperback)
Kate Bennett chucks her staid fiance Graham and heads to Tulane University Law School in the Big Easy. She doesn't really want to be a lawyer, but strives for the security she's sure a law degree will provide. Bad luck on the way down causes her to miss orientation, which in turn makes her unprepared for her first day of Criminal Law with the obnoxious and egomaniacal Professor Hoffman. He singles her out and proceeds to make her first year at Tulane grueling.

She finds solace with her study group which includes her sexy neighbor Nick. An attraction between them is instant, but she doesn't want to get involved so soon after breaking up with Graham. When Graham returns to the picture and proposes, Kate has to decide between playing it safe and going for her dreams. Along the way, she meets eccentric author Armstrong who provides additional enlightenment and comic relief.

Gaskell's fourth novel is another great character study of a woman on the verge of 30 in search of her own destiny. Secondary stories such as hook ups among the study group and an attempted suicide give added depth, though the character of Nick could have been more fleshed out. Gaskell has a keen eye for witty dialogue, which moves her stories along, making the reader feel like more than an observer.

5.0 out of 5 stars An A+, December 6, 2006
This review is from: Testing Kate (Paperback)
I loved this fourth book by Whitney Gaskell. It offers up more of the fun, relatable characters and clever dialogue of her previous books. Kate Bennett is a first year law student who must face the realization that playing it safe isn't always playing it best. Though a law career and a long time boyfriend may offer Kate the security she craves, she soon discovers true happiness likely lies elsewhere. With the help of her new friends--especially handsome, sweet Nick--and her hysterically quirky boss, Kate finds the courage to leap from safety to her real dreams. Taking place at Tulane Law School, Testing Kate is sprinkled with fun pre-Katrina New Orleans flair. This is another must read from Whitney Gaskell.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read., November 30, 2006

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't all cheesy and all fluff like some chick lit can be. This bordered more on a fiction than a romance. I liked how realistic it was and how the main character, Kate Bennett, handled her situation.

I've read this authors previous books and have liked most of them. I look forward to reading more tfrom this author.
