5.0 out of 5 stars We've been needing a book like this., August 17, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Testing the Spirits (Paperback)

This book has really filled a need for me. I've seen other books like this, but they tend to irritate me by being naive and looking for Satan behind every bush. This author is a Christian who fully recognizes the veracity of the Bible and the existence of Satan, and she doesn't hesitate to point to possible demonic involvement when she thinks it's appropriate. She doesn't go overboard, though. She's a trained psychologist, and she also gives sound scientific and psychological information and explanations where they fit.

Some of this material, such as that for UFO's, is familiar to me, but much of it is new. For example, I've long been skeptical of near-death experiences, but just didn't know what to make of them. Now I have something useful to go on.

A plus is the inclusion of exttensive notes at the back of the book, which give sources for further reading.

As another reader pointed out, the book is a bit technical and may be harder for the average reader to understand. Nevertheless, for anyone who really wants to know the truth about mystical experiences -- Christian or non-Christian -- I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, July 12, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Testing the Spirits (Paperback)
This book has truly cemented my faith. There are some real controversial statements being made but the author is able to back them up with real scientific evidence. Some of the evidence is a bit difficult to understand (a lot of psychological terms) for the average Joe but when you read it, it all make perfect sense. Having studied cognitive science I can say that the author knows what she is talking about and is able to dismiss all the new cults that have been established by logical reasoning and scientific data. A fascinating book to read even if you are not a religious person. It let's you see both sides of the story. Great stuff

1.0 out of 5 stars Condemning the spirits, June 28, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Testing the Spirits (Paperback)
Brought to us by the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship of Evangelical Students, the contents of this book become more understandable. It dutifully condems New Age thought, altered mental states and near-death experiences. In the chapter on channeling, it quotes a command from the Old Testament telling us to stone mediums. to death. ETs fare no better because they are working to Satin's advantage. The author is a Christian psychologist, an academic defender of the faith
