The decals sheets come wrapped around the spray can. The maker even acknolwedges that you have to put the decals under a heavy book because they are so curled that no printer could ever feed them. Guess what, several days under two year books and an old 25 pound printer...still won't feed they are so warped. So, now you have to buy add-on packs of paper that come flat. One has to think they did this on purpose to force you to buy more things.
The spray seems to vary in success. Some seem to come off the decal paper fine with no smudging, others the ink comes right off. While this is necessary for me completing a custom model I am working on, there is no way I can recommend.
The only useful things in this kit are the paper and the spray. The program won't let you import logos or images...UNLESS you buy from Sure Thing another program for just about the same price. It's effectively a bait-and-switch trick. The box specifically states "Custom Decal System - Electronically design or download custom art and print decals on your printer!"
Well how can you do custom decals if you won't let the User import images? All that's really needed is Word or a Photoshop program, the decal bonder spray and decal paper. I'm not impressed with Testors on that one. You are better off simply purchasing the decal paper and the bonder spray separately. You get more paper that way, and don't have to discard the mini-CD.
The kit comes with decal paper and decal spray.
Using a photo ink jet printer you print onto the decal film. You then apply several thin coats of the clear lacquer to seal and waterproof the printed image. Trim it down then apply just like any other decal.
For images I use Google Images quite often. I open Powerpoint then paste the images onto the Powerpoint slide. I first print onto plain paper to make sure the images are where I want them since the decal paper is smaller than a standard sheet of paper.
I've learned a number of techniques to get good decals. First not all ink jet printers work well for this use. You need to use a printer that is good at printing out photographs. A business type ink jet printer like the HP Officejet Pro 8600 does not make very good decals.
Use the normal ink level setting. Do not use the Best or Photo Setting. The decal film is not porous and if you apply a heavy coat of ink it will not produce crisp images.
Give the printed decal plenty of time to dry. I let mine air dry for a couple of minutes then finish it off with a hair dryer so that the ink is completely dry.
The last step is to apply the clear decal spray. Apply three maybe four very thin coats and allow each coat to dry before applying the next coat. Depending on temperature and humidity it can take up to ten minutes for each coat to dry.
Don't try to get a full coat each pass. A full wet coat will cause the ink to dissolve into the clear coat and that will blur the decal.
So take your time and you can make custom decals that look great.
The decals apply just like any other water decal.Read more ›
