Editorial Reviews

Product Description
A hard man is good to find!

Men and their hormones – hard, wild and aggressive. Joe Oppedisano presents them in dark stylised photos that sometimes appear to come from a different epoch but are simultaneously very modern. You see a lot of skin, sweat, leather and dirt and will be helplessly drawn to these specimens of raw masculinity. The photos are perfectly set into scene, usually with just a single light source in gloomy places like bars, cellars and stairwells, drawing you into a sexually charged demiworld.

From the Publisher
Joe Oppedisano is a fashion and lifestyle photographer. Born in New York in 1967, he first studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. After a short stint as stripper he worked as a fashion editor for W, Vanity Fair, L’Uomo Vogue and others. At the age of 30 he decided to never again dress up like a model and taught himself photography. He lives and works in New York City.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, January 9, 2007
By M. B. Whitacre (Melbourne, FL USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this book disappointing. For starters it's not cheap. Amazon offers it at the best price around but there are so many better books out there for much less money. A prime example is Paul Freeman's "Bondi Work." Do yourself a favor and buy it instead.

Anyway, back to "Testosterone." Call me shallow, but I expected a book with a masculine title like "Testosterone" to have lots of nudity. Wrong! Most of the time we see the models standing around smoking, wrestling, fighting, or leaning against walls. This is fine but the models are clothed, in their underwear, or in jockstraps. The nude shots are hidden throughout the book and I found myself flipping through as if looking for Waldo. One highlight of the book is Bruce Weber model Joseph Sayers who thankfully bears all.

Yes, there are several excellent photos and some gritty nudes but these are just too few. The book is full of too much average filler, especially considering the cost. I suppose if the price had been more reasonable then I would not be so critical.

Buyer beware.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost but not quite..., October 29, 2008
By Todd C. Spears (Valley Village, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Some of the photos in the book really are amazing but too many of them are just too similar - both the pictures and the models. I would really have preferred less of the "sequences" since they quickly got old. What I mean is, imagine a 3 minute fight scene then taking out eight random frames for a sequence. Once it's interesting but it was just too much.

As for the models, 90%+ of them have similar builds, outfits and even tattoos. There's a variation here and there but again, just not enough. It was almost monotonous after a bit. And one of the other reviewers was correct, for the price of the book I expected much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Masculinity, June 18, 2007
Photographer Oppedisano goes way beyond the usual pretty shots of muscled bodies in posed beauty shots by capturing the essence of raw masculinity in highly stylized situations that fuel the imagination and the libido. This is true erotic art, not the chessy beefcake that is the norm in most male photo books.
