Editorial Reviews

Unlike other testosterone book authors, Nelson's search for health pushed him to try most of the options that he describes in his book that can save a lot of time and trouble for any man that is serious about his health! --Carlos Barrero MD- Mexico

Nelson's straight-forward and scientific approach to sexual vitality and health restoration makes his new book trustworthy and practical. Someone once told him "Nelson, you were always the kid who did everyone else's homework for them." He is still doing our homework for us.- Tony Adams, journalist- Fort Lauderdale

This is a users guide, written by an activist who has used many of the available approaches for over 16 years and he shares his experiences of different approaches. But the author professionally trained as a chemical engineer, and this informs his discussion on the chemistry behind a daunting range of formulations. Simon Collins- HIV i-Base UK

As a physician who treats testosterone deficient male patients I have found Nelson's book so informatively and clearly written that I have recommended his book to medical colleagues. Importantly, reading this book has further educated me about testosterone. Finally, it should be pointed out that this book is not inappropriately enthusiastic about testosterone replacement therapy. But rather it very carefully spells out the need for an accurate diagnosis of testosterone deficiency, an analysis of the potential benefits and drawbacks of treatment, and the importance of the proper monitoring of therapy. I hope Nelson's book gains the wide readership it deserves because of its power to improve the health and quality of all men- --Paul Bellman, MD- New York City

I found this book to be very through, concise and educational.  I had no reservations about giving it a firm - it is extremely informative on the subject and can be read by the general audience. --William Phenn for Reader Views

This book provides the bare knuckles' how to tips, on the treatment of male hypogonadism. The book states how to maximize benefits while minimizing any side effects. And the book is written by someone with over two decades of personal experience. This makes the book that more valuable. Nelson Vergel's knowledge, experience, skill, and education on the subject of TRT has been proven in his prior writings, including Built to Survive: A Comprehensive Guide to the Medical Use of Anabolic Steroids, Nutrition and Exercise for HIV (+) men and women. Nelson deeply cares about men's health. It is more than a passing interest. For him, it is a matter of life and living. I am humbled to be a part of the book. Do yourself a favor and be good to yourself. Get the book! --Michael Scally MD- Houston

I have been prescribing testosterone for 5 years and I really believed I had done my homework well. But after reading "Testosterone: A Man's Guide", I realized that I was ignoring very important aspects of using this hormone! Unlike authors of other testosterone books, Nelson's search for health pushed him to try most of the options that he describes, so he provides practical "how-to" information. Aided by his chemical engineering degree and obsession for scientific data, he adds his own personal experience as he demystifies all testosterone myths by reviewing published studies. He also makes it easy for the reader to find a doctor in their area that prescribes testosterone by providing easily searchable directories. For those with no insurance, he shows you how to apply for patient assistance programs and research studies, and to obtain economical gels from compounding pharmacies (an important source that most men and doctors fail to access). To counteract side effects, he shows specific protocols to treat the enlargement of breasts and shrinkage of testicles that some men experience when using testosterone, and how to prevent potential cardiovascular problems caused by testosterone's increase of red blood cells. Unlike other books that claim that testosterone is the main solution to improve erectile strength, Nelson cautions that extra measures sometimes are needed by some men, and he specifies each one of them. He also adds to-the-point information about nutrition, supplements and exercise to maximize the benefits of testosterone. And he uncovers the false claims surrounding supplements believed to increase testosterone naturally. This book can save a lot of time and trouble for any man that is serious about his health!

I have studied and researched issues concerning men's health and fitness for over twenty years and have never seen in all that time, such an extraordinary compilation of clearly laid out information about Testosterone and its effect on men's health.

This data was available before but in a million different research pieces and articles. The author, in what was obviously a huge effort, brought together in one place, from all those sources, information every man needs to know in order to understand the impact of male hormones and how to enhance their own health and fitness through their medical uses.

The references in the back speak to how much research Mr. Verger had to do to write this book, and also gives the reader the sources to dig deeper into the subject. The glossary helped me, to clarify my understanding of some terms I did not know quite as well as I had assumed. Thank you for that Mr. Vergel.

I think this book will become the new standard of medically accurate information on Testosterone, written in a way as to be understandable to everyone, without any of the science being dumbed down.

I look forward to Meeting Mr. Vergel on his book tour and personally thanking him for the work he did in writing this book. It really is a public service to men everywhere.

Format: Paperback
This is the second edition of a book by the US activist Nelson Vergel. It is a users guide to testosterone by an HIV positive man who has researched the subject over many years for his own care.

The non-technical sections include helpful tips about what not to do as well as the best approaches. This looks at how to assess potential testosterone deficiency, including what to measure (free vs total), when and how, and the impact of age on target ranges including fluctuation in levels throughout the day. The information is in the context of supplementary approaches being dependent on working with your doctor, not only to ensure that an appropriate dose and formulation are used (oral supplementation being the least useful), but that routine monitoring guides the safety of this approach.

Replacement therapy is discussed, usually recognising this as a lifelong treatment, as testosterone supplementation reduces the need and ability for the body to continue it own production. The risks from interrupting treatment and a period of testosterone depletion until the body adjusts include depression, weight loss, lack of motivation and reduced sex drive - often the symptoms that suggested treatment in the first place.

The guide also discusses side effects from testosterone and how to manage these, including the experimental use of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) to maintain normal testicular function and reverse shrinkage. It discusses alternative treatment for low sex drive and erectile dysfunction including a review of data (or lack of it) for non-approved products. It also includes the importance of lifestyle modifications including diet and exercise, the importance of adherence and on finding a doctor that will monitor and prescribe treatment.

I just finished reading Nelson Vergel's book "Testosterone: A Man's Guide". I have to say that after reading someone's review on here about the fact that some of the book is "filler material" which is "found elsewhere", my expectations were low.

What I found instead is a book full of bare knuckle practical information that does not follow the "textbook" approach of others. Nelson includes his own experiences and that of others when talking about the different treatment options and side effect avoidance methods. And his "filler material" was not filler at all. His appendices include directories that we can search to find a doctor in our area that is trained on testosterone, how to apply for free testosterone if we do not have insurance, how to talk to your doctor about cheaper options made by compounding pharmacies, a list of research studies looking for patients now, an interview to get a doctor's point of view, and some nutrition and exercise tips that can help someone maximize testosterone effectiveness. He includes a package insert for an injectable and a gel since these documents have detailed information that responsible patients should read before starting a pharmaceutical product.

Nelson co-wrote a prior book called Built to Survive that has information about testosterone and anabolic steroid use for treating wasting syndrome. That book has a lot of good info on nutrition, supplements and exercise, but the hormone part is not applicable for people who do not have a wasting disease. So, Testosterone: A Man's Guide is a book that applies to all men regardless of health status.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is currently using or contemplating using testosterone. It will give you the tools to have intelligent conversations and questions to your doctor. And doctors tend to prescribe hormones a lot easier to patients who have done their homework.
