Roger Mason is a nutrition expert and a research chemist. He reviews the studies and publishes what is significant. With the controversial area of hormone replacement it is imperative that you know the results of the studies and this book does just that. There is no nonsense or long philosophical discussions-just the facts and their implications. I recommend any of Roger's books.

Common sense approach based on research!,
This review is from: Testosterone Is Your Friend: A Book for Both Men & Women (Paperback)
This is an honest, to the point book. Make no mistake though, to take control of your health requires an investment in learning about the common sense facts of hormone balancing. We Americans want everything simple and easy, and have been brainwashed to listen to Doctors who know very little to nothing about hormone balancing and nutrition. Read this book, it is more to the point than the famous Dr. Morgantaler's book and also has some safer and more practical recommendations, that moreover will not drain your bank account.Roger Mason's book was published almost 5 years before Dr. Morgentaler's, and rests on most of the same research/studies, and generally makes the same conclusions and recommendations as Testosterone for Life. Although Dr. Morgentaler is more aggressive with his use of Intramuscular injections of (esterized) Testosterone, something that Roger Mason points out as being inherently less natural and largely unnecessary and risky. Many will never learn that credentials are not a requirement for important or even breakthrough information. Relying on credentials only -- go invest with Bernie Madoff! Relying on credentials only -- ignore or diminish the importance and value of some very profound information published by Mr. Mason.

Opinionated, but not scholarly,

The author is not a medical doctor. He is a chemist who sells herbs and naturalsupplements on a website for his living. This book is more or less an expanded chapter from another of his books, "The Natural Prostate Cure". It's pithy, making reference to dozens of medical research studies. The typical reader is not in a position to obtain, read or understand these. What I can't find, is any of the author's own articles on hormones and nutrition published in any peer-reviewed professional journal. Without reading dozens of medical research articles, I can't say how many things in the book are true - but it certainly is sensational- istic. This style is not quite rigorous, and that makes me wary. Testosterone is a federal controlled substance, schedule III - anabolic steroid. It is so because it's toxic to the liver and has other severe side-effects. "Restoring" one's steroids to youthful levels by use of exonenous T may not be necessary or reasonable. Declining levels of testosterone are natural after age 40 or so, and within normal range, shouldn't be cause for medical treatment. There are very few true hypogonadal men, and the problem is often treatable with drugs or hormones other than steroids to address endocrine imbalances. The book's pedagogic stance that steroids are a fountain of youth may mislead readers into expensive and futile treatment in their quest for ageless vitality and virility. Readers who want a more considered approach to the topic may read "Testosterone for Life" by Abraham Morgentaler, MD. Dr. Morgentaler is an internationally published expert on male reproductive medicine, associate clinical Professor of Urology at Harvard Medical School, and founder of Men's Health Boston.
