Why GloFish?

GloFish fluorescent fish add brilliant color to any home, office, or classroom aquarium. These fun fish have the unique ability to absorb light and then re-emit it, creating the perception that they are glowing.

What are GloFish?

GloFish were originally bred to help scientists in detecting environmental pollutants. By adding a naturally derived fluorescence gene to the fish, scientists hoped to quickly and easily determine when a waterway was contaminated. Scientists soon realized the public’s interest in sharing the benefits of this research and GloFish were officially brought into the marketplace.

GloFish acquire their fluorescent color via a fluorescent protein gene that they inherit from their parents and pass on to their offspring through traditional breeding. Because of this, each line of GloFish originates from a single fish. For example, all Starfish Red Danios are descended from a single red fluorescent zebrafish.

I bought this tank as a replacement for a vase I had been using to house my betta fish Bartimaeus. When the tank got here it was nicely packaged and was very easy to put together. The filter current is not too strong for my betta and hums along, not too load to be annoying but a nice background noise. I love the neon light, it is very effective. The drawer under the tank is perfect for holding food and maybe another small item. My betta is very happy and swimming around contently.

The only Con i have is there is a bit of patterning on the side of the tank, almost like a rubbing, but it is only noticeable when you look really close, and once filled with water you cannot see it at all.

My only note is do not be deceived by the pictures, a 1.5 gallon tank is just big enough for one betta but not much else will fit in here. The advice is one inch of fish for one gallon of water. Also goldfish need about 10 gallons per fish.

I was really concerned about purchasing this kit after reading the reviews about people saying that it's too small for GloFish. From what I can tell, this is the main reason that this 3 Gallon kit gets less stars & less reviews than the equivalent but obviously larger 5 Gallon kit.

All of that being said, I contacted our local fish store & spoke to the owner who I've known nearly my entire life (his wife actually taught me in Pre-K!) to express my concern & seek advice. He told me that it would be perfectly fine to have 4 glofish (i.e. altered zebra danios) in the tank so that's what I purchased.

We have had the tank for several months now & the fish are perfectly fine with absolutely no issues as others have described - i.e. nipping each other, getting in filter, etc.

This kit is absolutely incredible & SUCH a great value. Maintenance is incredibly easy & the filters are extremely reasonable - I purchased the "Tetra Whisper Unassembled Bio-Bag Cartridges" on Amazon for only $10.78 with Prime. The light REALLY sets it off. I will say that I've found "cheaper" plants (i.e. TopFin sold at PetSmart) MUCH nicer than the GloFish brand plants/products. For $0.99 each, I was able to get plants - like the "mini yellow hair plant" - that glow like crazy under the light!!!!

Overall, I am certainly happy with this product & would definitely recommend it to a friend!

Don't fall for the marketing, this is not at all suited for a danio, barb, or tetra in GloFish lineup. The tank is beautiful and very eye catching, but all of these fish are schooling fish that need 5+ of their own kind and are far too active for such a small tank. This tank will work wonderfully as a shrimp tank or a betta tank. Many bettas look quite lovely under the blue lighting, especially pure white ones.

If you want a GloFish setup, do this instead:
1. Get a 20 gallon long or larger tank with a standard hood.
2. Buy an Actinic bulb and replace the standard hood's bulb, and/or swap the standard light for a Blue LED light.
3. Use black sand or the GloFish brand gravel for a substrate
4. Decorate with the GloFish brand decorations you want, or experiment with normal aquarium decorations that are flourescent colored.

This will give you a tank even more beautiful than this kit, and will actually allow your fish to thrive instead fouling up the inadequate water volume and dying quickly due to poor water conditions and stunted activity. Here's an example of what a proper sized GloTank can look like:[...]

I bought this at walmart, probably for a little less. I haven't had problems sometimes people complain about the blue LEDs dying out mine are fine but it probably could be closer to the center of the tank, it is a little loose when putting it all the way up. It is not a big aquarium and actually in truth it is too small for pretty much any fish but it has served me well until I decide to upgrade to a larger tank for glofish, probably a good tank for a desk or student. Filter also kind of small, doesn't create any degree of water flow really but I suppose it works well enough. There is a little storage bin in the bottom of mine and the one shown but there are some without, its a near idea but kind of too small to store much, I just use it at the moment to store small, extra glow in the dark decorations.

This tank has no air pump so you need to spend another $18 on an unsightly, noisy pump. The cover doesn't stop the evaporation that takes place very quickly. I would go for a different design that includes a better cover and an air pump.
On a side note the Glo fish are very sensitive and die quickly if your water is slightly off

GloFish are schooling fish, and are recommended to be in groups of 5 or more. This is a 3 gallon aquarium, and cannot hold more than 2-3 fish. These small Aquariums should not be sold.
