5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment of the subject., August 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Teutonic Religion: Folk Beliefs & Practices of the Northern Tradition (Llewellyn's Teutonic Magic) (Paperback)
I have long been curious about Asatru, and picked this book up on a whim a few years ago. I was extremely taken with the learned and well reasoned presentation of the information in the book. Unlike so many "neo-pagan" books, I found that this one presented an actual religion rather than a system for trying to work "magic" spells. The discussion of Asatru beliefs was very clear, and is enhanced by the inclusion of references. I found the lengthy bibliography and list of books suggested for further study particularly helpful.

I'm very glad I picked up this book rather than the extremely lame book "Norse Magic" by Conway, which had been next to it on the shelf at the store. (And Conway's book is still sitting there . . . .)

It is a great shame this book has gone out of print. I strongly recommend it anyone who is interested in Asatru. I will be looking for other books by Gundarsson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only a 10?? Can't I give an 11?, May 22, 1998

Kveldulf is the definitive source for all things Teutonic. Edred Thorsson may have the edge when it comes to runes, but for absolutely everything else (and even the runes) buy this book! (and it's partner book, "Teutonic Magic". This man is a modern day skald, getting the information to those in need. If you only buy one book this year, make it this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars The best book available on Asatru., February 14, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Teutonic Religion: Folk Beliefs & Practices of the Northern Tradition (Llewellyn's Teutonic Magic) (Paperback)
This is, by far, the best book available on Asatru or Norse Paganism. Kveldulfr holds a PhD from Cambridge and knows his history, and is also a well known worshipper of Odin. The rituals are more ornate than most Asatruar use, but the heart of the book is right on. A welcome change to the usual rubbish published on the Northern Tradition

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, March 24, 2009
This review is from: Teutonic Religion: Folk Beliefs & Practices of the Northern Tradition (Llewellyn's Teutonic Magic) (Paperback)
I was highly impressed by the amount of information I found in Kveldulf's book--it was a refreshing read after digging through piles of Wiccatru and New-Age slush that is the so-called "Northern Tradition" published today.

Happened upon it for $6 at a used book store; it is probably worth $60 for what it contains. I did, however, notice a few spurious bits and pieces here and there that struck me as Wiccan-sounding items, which I'll just think were additions from a largely Wiccan publisher.

This review is from: Teutonic Religion: Folk Beliefs & Practices of the Northern Tradition (Llewellyn's Teutonic Magic) (Paperback)
I have Teutonic religion, folk beliefs & practices by Kveldulf Gunderson.I keep seeing this as 'out of print, and a date of 1960's, but he wasnt born till 67.

Did the son do a reprint ?
same library of congress # but says first edition in it, first printing 1993.

So whats up with this?
I have access to "magik" by same author as well and wonder if I shouldnt grab it..incidently I only paid 2.00 for my copy...

curiosity peaked since this guy also wrote magiK, and dates and editions just not adding up except library of congress number.
any advice would be much helpful thank you.
Sincerely Robin

This book is an excellent resource for those interested in Asatru. It may be out of print but there is now an ebook of it available at Freya Aswynn's site for much cheaper.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, July 21, 1999

This review is from: Teutonic Religion: Folk Beliefs & Practices of the Northern Tradition (Llewellyn's Teutonic Magic) (Paperback)
As a beginer this is the book I started with, and it help alot, most of the other information I found tends to be really new age-ish. Though I'm still studying, I'd suggest this book for those interested in embracing Nothren Paganism.

I been into the norse pagan religion for three or so years now, gundarsson knows his material! This is not for the beginner,His take on the runes is very thought out,and has helped me alot in my own studies. This is a bit "new age" He definetly has that eastern influence,But it is still a good book for anyone interested in embracing the northern faith.

This book is a good discripation of the Tuetonic ways. It is a hard book for people to understand. But the general knowledge given is excellent. The Runes and Rituals are nicely presented but lack a little bit of understanding. Overall I would say that this book is for the newest and most experienced believers and people looking to learn.
