When they met for the first time at the city dog pound, Ikwe had said: Aneen, Animoosh. Neen Anishnabay Ikwe. Which means in English, "How are you, dog? I am an Anishnabay woman."

This is the story of how Tex got to the dog pound.

PreSchool-Grade 2-Tex is the runt of a litter of eight English foxhounds. During the first weeks of his life, he stays with his mother and siblings in a large red box, where he is content to eat, sleep, and play. Soon, however, experts evaluate the puppies for their show-dog potential, and Tex's size and overbite eliminate him as a contender. As his brothers and sisters leave with new owners, Tex remains, and is eventually taken to the pound. His dreams of a loving home and a human friend finally come true when an Anishnabay woman chooses him to be her best friend. Dobson's watercolor illustrations greatly enhance the slight story line, and the artist's effective use of white space focuses and holds readers' attention. The whimsical expressions of the small black-and-white dog will endear Tex to picture-book audiences.

This is a very sweet book with a strong message of unconditional love that children can understand. A good book to read to or with children. It gives an opportunity to embelish on some good moral qualities much needed in this world. As a parent, and breeder of champion dogs, I highly recommend it.
