An excellent adaptation of S.E. Hintons novel,
By Mel Bourne (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tex [VHS] (VHS Tape)
What a great film this was- there was good acting, a good script, unexpected moments of hilarity- and best of all this film stayed close to the book. Many of the characters' lines in the movie are directly from the book. If you are fan of S.E. Hinton and her writings, you won't be disappointed by it. In my mind, "Tex" was even better than "The Outsiders," at least in terms of the movies.Matt Dillon is superb as Texas McCormick, a quiet, somewhat immature teenager living in Oklahoma, the usual setting for Hinton's books. There are few moments in the film (don't worry, I won't give them away) that were extremely funny. However, not only is the humor entertaining in the movie, but the drama is well done too. Tex faces changes at home, with his friends Johnny and Jamie, and at school, and the result makes for a captivating story line. The selection for the supporting cast is right on in almost every case- Jim Metzler plays Tex's brother Mason, who has to tend for his younger brother while also looking ahead to college and his own future. Emilio Estevez is Tex's spunky friend Johnny and Meg Tilly is Johnny's independent-minded sister Jamie, the object of Tex's affections. Even the filming and quality of the movie is not bad, considering that it was made two decades ago. The music is usually fitting in each scene, and the script came off sounding realistic and genuine. All in all, this is a movie well worth checking out. I think the only thing wrong with this movie is the rating it received; there's probably enough swearing in this movie to have earned it a PG-13 rating. Highly recommended.

In the rough days of teen life trying to find where one belongs in relationship to one's self, family and friends and the need for change and breaking away. This movie portrays all of that with great care and fantastic acting by the entire cast.I highly reccomend it.

Tex is a 15 year old Oklahoma farm boy with more than his fair share of problems .He is being raised by his elder brother in the absence of parents -his mother is dead and his father simply walks away from domestic responsibility .the movie is about how this personable and engaging -but not over bright -teenager strives to make sense of his world .It examines the pains and perils of growing up and Tex 's family life is not a bed of roses .The movie treats of themes untypical of Disney productions --booze, sex, fighting ,class distinction and economic problems ,school problems and the sudden need to grow up and assume responsibility more quickly than most .
This is both the appeal and the problem of the movie-it is an adult look at children's lives and treats the issues seriously ,but tries to cram too much into a brief running time .Consequently the picture feels slightly overcooked and issue heavy . Still it is splendidly acted especially by Matt Dillon as Tex and by Meg tilly as his girl friend This is awarm hearted but not a sappy movie and its honesty ,sincerity and skill commend it to me ,but a little less plot would have made it better

GREAT MOVIE!,

I read the book so desided to rent the movie. I was so glad I did. If you have not seen the movie, see it. But read the book first. Then you get the real feel for the movie. Matt Dillon is goregous in the movie! All those actors are big stars today, like Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez. The others did good too. If you have seen The Ousiders and liked it, you will like Tex also. I never regeret watching it. I enjoyed every moment of the movie. It is a little different from the book. But it follows the same guidelines.

Being from and still living in Tulsa, Ok, I had this movie on vhs which over the years couldn't watch anymore. This movie is pretty much the way I grew up, except about 10 years before their time. There are scenes in the movie of landmarks that used to here in Tulsa and have since been forced to be torn down, which one was Bell's amusement shown at the fair. Now the fairgrounds is still their but it's not the same. There was a scene at a mall which over the years has grown bigger ad not the same. And last of all the Camelot hotel which looked like a castle, which at one time was really a luxury hotel where many famous people stayed, and it was really sad to me to see it being torn down, but thanks to films the memories of times gone by well never fade. As also the outsiders filmed here with the drive in movie with the grace of everything going for it, it is still there. But in my opinion these may not be movies for the rich and famous that don't understand what life could have been like as it is portayed in the movie, it does happen, and seeing Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez and Meg Tilly in their younger days and actually being here when these movies were made makes an Okie boy proud!

it was such fun to go back and see how much bixby has changed in 24 years. even though a few things are still there, most are gone now, as one person said, by the flood of 1986. the university towers, the round building they go into for the drug transaction is where my jr.-sr. prom was held in 1977. it was a good feeling just to recognize thee places and bring back great memories from the old days..
