"What'd he say?. . . . .",
By
This review is from: Texas Across the River [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Dean Martin is an interesting actor; he can be tremendously active and intense or entirely deadpan, depending on the film he's in. In Texas Across the River, he spends most of his time just standing around watching the hilarious antics of Joey Bishop, Alain Delon, a surprisingly effective Peter Graves, and a solid cast of unknowns who make this movie a delightful western parody.A never-ending series of sight gags unrolls as a gunslinger, cavalry officer, french nobleman and indian war party all attempt to defend their honor, vanquish their enemies and pursue their individual goals, all without putting out too much effort or risking getting hurt in the process. After watching this inane collection of macho lunatics charge around the screen for an hour, it comes as no surprise that a charming southwestern belle and an enchanting young indian maiden finally take matters into their own very capable hands. There's no end to the chase, the laughs, the romance and the sheer fun as Texas Across the River gets everyone in over their heads. Fans of westerns, comedies or just plain good movies will absolutely love this one!

One of the funniest--on a par with The Villain,

A recurring line by by Peter Graves, playing a cavalry officer, was one of the funniest lines. Whenever he issued a command to his troops, no matter whether the intended command was "Forward!," "Dismount!," "Mount up!," or whatever, the command he gave always sounded the same: "Ha-Roar, Har!" Once a disgruntled cavalryman asked another, "What did he say?" and the other simply shrugged. Dean Martin was his usual rascally self--the very image of the anti-hero, and Alain DeLon, who was a newcomer to me was a good foil. This is a fine Western comedy, on a par with The Villain, with Kirk Douglas, which is by all odds my favorite in the genre. Joseph (Joe) Pierre,

This is a movie that my family watches over and over. Would really like to see it on DVD. Dean Martin and Joe Bishop are really good in the movie.

I've searched high and low to find this classic western comedy. It is one of my favorite Dean Martin vehicles. I felt that all the actors and actresses played their parts to perfection. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a lighthearted romp through the west.

Western satire, harmless fun!,

Blame it on the success of Cat Ballou if you must but the copycats in Hollywood quickly produced a number of 60's western comedies to capitalize. Texas Across the River is a good one.It offers campiness, fine sight gags, the oh so easy to look at Rosemary Forsythe (whatever happened to her anyway?), and good performances from Alain Delon, Joey Bishop and a host of 60's stock performers. Holding it all together is Dean Martin. Martin plays a character who is humerous, tough, perplexed and believable as the gunrunning Sam Hollis. The plot involves the competition between Martin and Delon for the charms of Forsythe with segues into a variety of subplots and comedic situations involving an Indian war party and the Cavalry. It is Martins performance that holds your attention and keeps the film from being nothing more than a series of blackouts. He is truly good in this film and it is an example of how underappreciated he has been as an actor, especially a comedic actor!

Longing for DVD,

This movie has to rank as one of the funniest under-rated movies in the whole spoof western genre. The incident with the witch doctor, the duel with the chief's son, the flaming arrows, no, I'm not going to tell you what happened. The nude swim in the water hole, and how that girl can fill a wet blanket, (brings a whole new meaning to the phrase}.
This movie MUST MUST MUST be transferred to DVD or many potential fans will miss out and I shall be spitting mad. So, "To the ror, har!" Tony Edwards

Once in awhile a movie comes alone that is so bad, it's good!!Texas Across the River is such a movie. Noone can be offended as Indians, Texans, southerners, cowboys, women, and settlers are all made out to be stupid. It's totally enjoyable and very funny!!

This is one of the best Martin movies ever. Although I am part Indian I did not take offense, as fun is "poked" at everyone;Indians, Southerners, Calvary, and Texans. I'm a teacher and this is one of the few movies I can show to my class for pure fun.
