Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Bestseller Thomas's fifth Whispering Mountain American historical (after 2009's The Lone Texan) is another winner. When Texas Ranger Duncan McMurray tells gambler Lewton Paterson that he's sending three men from good families to court his three cousins, Lewton, wishing for a respectable life and family, decides to take the place of one of the men. He meets the three ladies, but spends his time with Em, the ranch overseer-who is really one of the ladies and never intends to marry. When news reaches the ranch of Duncan's capture in Mexico, Lewt and Em set out to save him. Tension rides high, mixed with humor and kisses more passionate than most full-on love scenes. Fans will be delighted by this series continuation. (Apr.)

A charming and captivating tale, Jodi Thomas' Texas Blue, is a western romance that is all heart. Readers searching for a novel that will delight and enchant need to look no further than this latest installment in the Whispering Mountain series.

Lewton Paterson is a gambler with a dream. He wants the house, kids and a loving wife to come home to, but has lost all hope that a man like him can ever find it. When his friend Duncan tells him of his three young cousins in need of husbands, Lewton decides he might just give the chance of making his own family one last shot. Letting go of his gambling persona, Lewton takes on the disguise of a sweet gentleman in order to persuade one of the three young ladies to marry him, but it's the quiet female ranch hand that captures all his attention.

Emily McMurray is distressed to discover her cousin Duncan has sent three strangers onto her ranch in order to court her and the two other McMurray sisters. Emily is strongly convinced she will never marry and has no desire to meet the young men. Emily thinks all her problems are solved when she convinces a friend to stand in her place as the elegant McMurray sister, while she continues to take care of the ranch. What she doesn't expect is the mysterious Paterson fellow to follow her around and break down the walls of her heart. Though they have lived most of their lives alone, they soon realize this may be the one person they cannot be without.

The best words to describe Texas Blue: simply stunning. The romance between these two characters is a true treat to read about. It is not at first sight or immediate, but rather developed through the course of the novel in an absolutely charming and intriguing way.

I found this story very sweet. The Hero isn't necessarily a winner or typically heroic, but endearing. I was a little confused by why the heroine was so afraid of men from something that happened prior to her being 5 years old and there after being raised by many strong, good men. The motivation of that character was lacking for me, but the motivation of the hero was very interesting. There was not a lot of sexual action in this book(good for some) and, therefore, the characters relationship developed naturally. I would recommend this book, but I might not rave about it.

Lewt Paterson is a thriving gambler, but is looking for something more real in his life. He decides that he needs a rich wife and when he hears his friend talk about trying to marry off his cousins, Lewt thinks this might be the answer to his situation. When he arrives at Whispering Mountain Ranch as one of the suitors there to woo the cousins, he find that he is more drawn to the female ranch hand, Em.

Emily McMurray doesn't want to get married, so she persuades a friend to pretend to take her place entertaining the suitors. But when Lewt decides to spend more and more time with her, learning about the ranch, Em isn't sure what to do with the unfamiliar feelings assaulting her.

Texas Blue is part of Jodi Thomas' Whispering Mountain series. Even though I've not read any of the other books, this one is book 5, I found myself intrigued with this little corner of Texas that Ms Thomas has carved out and the family that has settled there. The book stands alone quite well, but characters from previous book (and likely future ones) do make their appearances (or at least are well mentioned).

Lewt and Emily both had scarred childhoods, and it's interesting to see how it effects them in adulthood and colors how they see the world and the opposite sex. I like how Ms Thomas really develops the friendship between the characters as the foundation of their relationship instead of just focusing on the attraction.

This book made me cry numerous times. And I also found it to be a page turner when the action (involving a rescue mission to Mexico) picked up in the second half. I recommend this book and am going to be finding myself copies of earlier books in the series as my interest as been piqued.

I thought the pace was perfect. The balance of humor at the ranch and the drama of Duncan's mission with the Rangers was just right. Texas Blue is the first of Jodi Thomas' historical novels I've read and I look forward to reading more.

Lewton Preston jokingly tells his good friend and ranger, Duncan McMurray that he would make s good husband to one of his cousins. Duncan tells Lewt that he is not husband material. This upsets Lewt. Duncan has found three male suitors for his cousins. They will me traveling to the Whisper Mountain Ranch tomorrow. Lewt cons one of the suitors into taking his place. Now all Lewt has to do is learn the ranch life and win one of the McMurray's women's hands in marriage.

Emily is the only one of the three sisters, who is less than thrilled that Duncan has sent suitors for them. Rose and Beth can have the men. Em has no interest in every getting married. She would rather stay on the ranch and take care of the horses. Em pays a friend to pretend to be her for a week. When Em is asked by Lewt to teach him about ranching, she will be put to the ultimate test.

Texas Blue is the fifth Whispering Mountains novel. It can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone novel. The best part of reading a Jodi Thomas novel is...the love and passion she brings to the story and characters. I absolutely fell in love with Lewt and Em. Lewt because he thought he was quite the ladies man but in a charming way and Em because she has a feisty personality and she kept Lewt in line. As I was reading this book, I could imagine myself at the ranch. Too bad that the ranch, Em, Lewt and the rest of the McMurrays don't exist. They would be great people to hang out with. I guess that I will jut have to settle for visiting with them in the books. If you want to rope yourself a winning read than pick up a copy of Texas Blue today! You won't regret it.
