Good compilation, not in tune with the movie,
By A. Estes (Maine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Album (Audio CD)
I've always been a firm believer in the old cliche that heavy metal and horror make good bed-fellows. It seems to me that any good horror movie should be accompanied by a good heavy metal soundtrack. And while 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Album' is a solid collection of new metal tunes, it just does not have any connection to the movie. The movie was hands down, brutal. There wasn't any comic relief. It was unrelenting and cruel. And while many critics hated it (Roger Ebert gave it zero stars) and many question the minds behind it, (Michael Bay as producer and a music video veteran as a director) it was a piece of art. This soundtrack seems to be more of an after-thought than anything (heck, it was released three weeks after the movie). None of the music was featured in the movie and none of the songs were written with the movie in mind -- which isn't always a bad thing as long as the songs fit in with the movie -- but these don't. I know when Morgan had the gun in his mouth at the hands of the sheriff or when Andy was on the hook, Hatebreed wasn't the first thing that came to my mind, but I digress. As a stand alone compilation, it fares pretty well. Pantera's "Immortally Insane" makes it's second soundtrack appearance (first surfacing on 'Heavy Metal: 2000'). Fear Factory delivers a new remix of an unreleased song ('Archetype') and plenty of metal's upcoming stars make appearances (Messhugah, Shadows Fall, Lamb of God). Finger Eleven's "Stay In Shadow" seems oddly out of place, or maybe it's just because the track-listing got it wrong. On the back of the case, it has Finger Eleven's and Lamb of God's tracks mixed up (another sign of low quality, aside from the severe lack of movie art-work). So I guess it's a good disc to pick up if you dig the bands on it, but if you try to connect it with the movie, it's useless.

Many people are writing poor reviews on this cd. Well, that's because they have been writing the reviews with the movie in mind, so this review is a good 4 star review, being reviewed without the movie in mind. This cd has great bands on it, and no, this cd don't go good with the movie, but it is a great cd for the bands that are on it. Pantera, Hatebreed, Soil, Nothingface, Shadows Fall, Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Morbid Angel, Lamb of God and Sworn Enemy are all really great bands. Static X, Mushroomhead, Seether, 40 Below Summer, Index Case, Finger Eleven (Which is also switched with Lamb of God) and Core-Tez are all good, but I wouldn't have put them on this cd. The only band that I don't like on this is Motogrator, I am sick of Mushroomhead wannabes. If you are looking for a soundtrack that goes with the movie, than I would suggest that you don't buy this, but if you just want it for the music, than by all means, get it, it's a great cd.

Could've Been Better,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Album (Audio CD)
This is a pretty cool soundtrack. What other soundtrack do you know of that has Pantera,Hatebreed,Shadows Fall,Morbid Angel, Fear Factory,& Lamb Of God on it? Three for the bands on it. Though they should've added Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Mayhem, Six Feet Under,White Zombie, and some other cool bands, and take away bands like 40 Below Summer,Static X, & Soil. That's just my oppion

I have never seen the movie (either version) so I can write a review with out being biased towards it. This CD rocks! There is a good mix of styles going from almost mellowish rock to making your ears bleed. I give it 5 Stars!

There was soooooooo much potential for this soundtrack. I mean, I was expecting some cannibal corpse or carcass or some other band death/gore/grind band. But NO! I get #$^%#$% Seether and Finger eleven and other crap! I will give it credit though. It DID have some good bands ( meshuggah, lamb of god for example) and Morbid angel so i will give it a extra star for effort

There was no pop/rock music in this movie. It was just a phenomenal film score. That was one of the aspects that made this film so damn good. At the end the sheer terror and disturbance of the film was not interrupted or destroyed rather by some new stupid song by Creed or Godsmack or Slipknot. It had score music throughout and closed with the most perfect score music that could have fit this film. Why does every single movie made these days have to be associated with the degrating and declining musical ability of so many of today's pop artists? Just leave this one alone, the score was so perfect. I have nothing against any of the bands on this album or the songs, I'm just saying that as was done with The Blair Witch Project, a movie that was made so perfectly, and was pop music-less FOR A REASON has one again been plagued with it. The music may be really good, but don't associate with the movie by any means. Just get the score

ok soundtrack,
This review is from: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Album (Audio CD)
i appologize for the lengthy review, but theres 18 songs to review. so its kinda longer than a normal cd.this is an ok soundtrack that showcases some good songs by some good bands, some bad songs by good bands, and bad songs by bad bands. this one covers them all. heres the lowdown: pantera-immortally insane...4/5...this is a good song with a sweat solo but repetative riff. needs more variation. hatebreed-below the bottom...5/5...say what you want, but i dont mind hatebreed. their heavier than people give them credit for. i like this song alot. soil-pride...5/5...this song is more catchy then genually good, but who cares? this is one of the catchiest heavier songs ive ever heard. (this isnt 'my sherona' catchy) static x-deliver me...2/5...oh, how i hate static x, but this song is definately better than the rest ive heard. but its still not all that good. mushroomhead-43...3/5...ive always had a soft spot for mushroomhead, i dont know why, but ive liked them ever since i was like thirteen. but this songs not all that great. kind of boring, id suggest getting xx and xiii, those are good albums. seether-pig...4/5...this is a more grungy song. still its not that bad. nothingface-down in flames...4/5...i hate to say it, but this songs pretty good. i like the verses, but the choruses arent all that great. all in all, its not a bad song. 40 below summer-self medicate...1/5...yes, this song is absolutely terrible stupid. motograter-suffocate...5/5...im ashamed to say so, but this song is really good. shadows fall-destroyer of senses...5/5...i love shadows fall. their kind of thrash/heavy/death metal all wrapped into one band. meshuggah-rarional gaze...5/5...what can i say? meshuggah. this is an awesome song. the whole cd is worth for this song. fear factory-archetype (remix)...2/5...i love the original archetype, but this one wrecks the whole song. get the album archetype, its awesome. morbid angel-enshrined by grace...5/5...is by morbid angel, do i need to say anything else? index case-listen...1/5...stupid. its something i would hear if i went to one of those local band shows. stupid. finger eleven-stand in shadow...2/5...do not like finger eleven or this song. lamb of god-ruin...5/5...this is...i cant describe it. pop this song in, turn it up, stand between the speakers, and you will understand. sworn enemy-as real as it gets...1/5...stupid song. core-tez-five months...2/5...what is this? mexican metal? it goes from distortion to spanish guitars? this is stupid. its good to laugh at though. to some this up, its a good cd if you want to get into some good metal bands. the rest...meh...crap.

Wimpy,

Ok, the movie was a bomb. That is pretty pathetic that a movie released in 2003 with all the advances in special effects could not top a movie made in the 1970s on what seems to be a budget of $500. The movie should have made the point that producing anything for our conformist society will wind up trash. I think the producers of the soundtrack forgot this information.I would rate this soundtrack higher than other blockbuster horror film soundtracks because most of the bands on here are somewhat decent. But the fact that they bands are okay does not eclipse the question of whether or not the music fits with the movie. As one of my predecessing reviewers mentioned, cannibal corpse would have been an obvious choice. Also, I would have added some Carcass, Nile, Dimmu Borgir, Slayer and other underground black/death/thrash/grindcore music. |
