Super post-war blues from Texas,
By Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Texas Country Blues 1948-1951 (Audio CD)
This CD collects 23 rare post-war blues recordings from the Texas area. Most of the artists here made very few recordings - in some cases only one or two - and they are included here. That doesn't mean they were bad records; in fact, some of these sides are excellent.
Willie Lane's BLACK CAT RAG, done for Star Talent in 1949, is a dynamite recording; so are James Tisdom's LAST AFFAIR BLUES and CADILLAC BLUES, the last unissued until now. LAST AFFAIR is a blues ballad that is riveting, especially Tisdom's guitar. Monister Parker cut just two sides in 1951 for the very obscure Nucraft label in Houston, and his BLACK SNAKE BLUES is a medium-slow gem with a snappy guitar accompaniment. Other artists included on this CD are Sunny James, Rattlesnake Cooper, Sonny Boy Davis, and Andrew Thomas, to name a few. Anyone interested in post-war blues, country style, will love this CD. A must-have disc in my book. |
