Editorial Reviews

Review

Clayton is publishing perhaps the most comprehensive GPS guide I've ever seen, and it's only peripherally related to aviation. The waypoints identified are so numerous, in fact, that it's not practical to publish one edition for the entire country. Instead, Clayton publishes one for each state. As this is written, Wendt has GPS Companion guides out for Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida and California, and he's working on the other states as quickly as he can.

With Wendt's handy little 4x5 book in my flight bag, I'll now be able to fly directly to Mount Whitney at 36 34 45N 118 70 30W and point out the peak with confidence. Alternately, I'll be able to zero in on Hearst Castle at 35 41 07N 121 10 00W and fly directly over the huge, rectangular reflecting pool.

If you're looking for something other than an airport such as Bridalveil Falls in Yosemite (37 43 00N 119 38 45W), you'll find Wendt's California GPS Companion an indispensable guide. -- Excerpts from article by Sr. Editor Bill Cox, Plane & Pilot Magazine, March 1998

From the Publisher

The addition of the new Texas GPS Companion in November, 1998 brings our coverage to ten (10) States! It incorporates everything we've learned along the way. The Texas book lists Latitude, Longitude and in many cases elevation for thousands of named points of interest. The book includes a tables and hints section which is tailored to the state. We've also included our new "Points Around the USA" section!

It is comprehensive! A good Texas road map will list about 3000 cities and towns in its index. The GPS Companion lists 6140 towns in the state of Texas! The book contains over 8170 locations in all, on 392 pages.

It is readable! The index of a road map is printed in condensed 5 point type. The GPS Companion is printed in 9 point courier type.

Elevations are included for over 3700 locations in all. Of course all of the 365 airports are listed with elevation. And there are 237 mountain summits with elevation as well.

Here is a summary of the points included. Airports 365 Beaches 24 Bridges 24 Buildings, misc. 27 Cape, Islands, etc. 43 Cities & towns 6140 Dams 19 Gardens, Conservatory 7 Golf Courses 167 Harbor, Marina, Bay 26 Lake & Reservoir 337 Locales, misc. 144 Mine 11 Museums 7 Observatories 2 Ridge, Cliff 23 State & Nat'l Parks 75 Pillar (Rock) 20 University, College 116 Spring 30 Summit 237 Tower (lookout) 29 Tracks (race) 12 Valley, Gap 77 Waterfall 28

Buildings and Locales include landmarks such as the Astrodome, the McDonald Observatory, Old Fort San Jacinto, the YO Ranch and the Alamo.

5.0 out of 5 stars it's what it says it is, December 3, 2006
By
This review is from: Texas GPS Companion (Paperback)
I have no idea why others rated this so low. It is a REFERENCE book - perfect for geography/social science teachers and/or students that are doing projects in Texas. If you don't know how to search the internet for lat/long coordinates (and it can be hard to find the exact one you want) then you NEED a reference book that has them right at hand. If I want to know where Dallas is located on the lat/long system, I can find it in about 20 seconds using this book. It is not for light reading, it is for reference. I do not believe the author made any claims other than that. So it's perfect if you need to easily be able to find over 8,000 locations in the state of Texas. It's in my reference library and I use it with my students.
