Review

"This book is valuable. Colorful and fun, it is bursting with little facts and big ideas. It all adds up to an important celebration of the spicy mix of ingredients--and the exhuberance--that has made Texas successful over the years." Walter Isaacson, Steve Jobs

"Father and son authors Sam and Andrew Wyly have produced possibly the best illustrated and most spirited pro-Texas book ever..." Glenn Dromgoole, Texas Reads

"Everyone should read this book. Yeah, everyone, Texan or not." Katie Thompson, TexasGrizzlette.com

From the Inside Flap

Why is it that Texas is growing while the other forty-nine states in America are flat or flat-out broke?  Why does Texas-known for oil wildcatters and cowboys-lead the country in wind turbines? Why does everybody want to move there, even In-N-Out Burger?

The answer, according to Sam Wyly and Andrew Wyly, is simple: Texas got it right!  The Wylys' new full-color richly illustrated book offers a dynamic and incisive guide to what makes Texas tick.  Although it has always been among the nation's biggest states, Texas is today the most prosperous.  Using their keen understanding of the Lone Star State's history, politics, culture, and economics, the Wylys carefully examine the ideas, events, and personalities behind Texas's rise. Via photo essays, portraits, and arresting and informative infographics, the book covers everything from Texas's original entrepreneurs-the pointers, refugees, cattlemen, and adventurers who came from all over and achieved success by understanding and working the land around them-to modern, category-leading businesses like Dell, Whole Foods, and Southwest Airlines.

While Texas Got It Right! will be critically valuable as an educational reference for the state's 25-million-and-growing population, it is also paced with ideas begging to be exported to the other, less fortunate states.  Smart, insightful, and humoraux commentary combined with hundreds of extensively research, show-stopping images make for a reading experience that's as inspiring as it is informative.

More About the Author

Sam Wyly was raised in small-town Louisiana. In 1957, he got his MBA from the University of Michigan and began his career as a salesman for IBM and then a manager for Honeywell. At 28, he created his first company, University Computing Company, which became the first of six enterprises that Wyly grew to over $1 billion valuations.

Over the next fifty years, he became one of America's top multiple entrepreneurs, building companies in industries ranging from oil and gold mining to arts and crafts, from software to budget steakhouses and clean electricity.

Wyly resides in Dallas and in Aspen, Colorado, with his wife, Cheryl, and has six children, twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His memoir, 1,000 Dollars & an Idea: Entrepreneur to Billionaire, was published in 2008, and his illustrated business biography, Beyond Tallulah, by Dennis Hamilton, came out in 2011.

I don't know whether Texas really gets it right, but this book does. It's every bit as colorful, quirky and energetic as the state itself. While it's clearly more in line with conservative viewpoints, it praises Texas heroes and institutions across the full spectrum, left to right, male and female, representing all walks of life and claims to fame. It also makes for a very pleasant, easygoing read -- entertaining and nicely formed into bite-sized chunks. The unpretentious prose, sprinklings of factoids, abundance of illustrations and brightly hued charts are as welcoming as a big Texas "howdy." I give this book four Lone Stars.

I have known Sam Wyly since 1957 when we both worked in the Dallas IBM office. He became a very creative entrepreneur in various industries which gave him the knowledge and experience to author "Texas Got It Right" ! His brother Charles (who died in an accident in Aspen, Colorado) was great partner with complementary skills which provideded the balance often needed in the entrepreneurial world. As a businessman in Texas for many years, I found the book very interesting and informative. Congratulations, Sam.

I got a complimentary copy in my gift bag at the "Barbera Bush Celebration of Reading" literacy fundraiser in Dallas last month and begrudgingly opened it as I had run out of reading material. Didnt look like something id be interested in What a surprise! I read the whole thing on a 2 hour flight and loved every minute of it! Easy reading, great illustrations, fascinating histories, stories and facts. I'm buying multiple copies as Christmas gifts!

This book was a very fun and easy read that taught me a lot about my adopted State. It should be enjoyed by any audience from grade school children to adults, from Texans to non-Texans and most importantly business executives to politicians. The lessons aren't confined to how Texas became the thriving State it is now. The real lessons are in how Texas has made decisions to set it up for success in the competitive inter-State marketplace.

The Wylys have done a wonderful job putting to print why I am proud to now be a Texan!

Can a lively, illustrated, 176-page book of profiles, essays and insights into Texas save America? In "Texas Got It Right!", Sam and Andrew Wyly might have done it.

While most of America has been mired in recession, job loss and corporate defections in recent years, Texas has been operating like exactly what it is: a maverick state impervious to what ails everyone else. It has welcomed those giant corporations fleeing New York, California and elsewhere, and landed 40 percent of all the new hires in America since 2009. It has the fastest growing population in the country, maintains crazily attractive home prices, and in the last 20 years is the home of more new businesses than any other state in the union. Texas is an entrepreneur's paradise.

In "Texas Got It Right!", entrepreneurs Sam and Andrew Wyly explain that this is not a miracle. What has happened there is the product of Texas's tireless independence in legislative choices, a welcoming work environment, and generations of people with fierce desires to live lives on their own terms.

There likely are no better authors for this highly readable book. Sam Wyly has built eleven corporations in Texas over the last 50 years, most of them valued at more a billion dollars. He long ago figured out what the state uniquely had to offer people with ideas. Now, working with son Andrew -- an entrepreneur, investor and film producer -- he has laid it out as a kind of joyous roadmap for others to emulate.

I am an American by birth and a Texan by the Grace of God. "Texas Got It Right!" brought to my attention a life that has taken my Texas surroundings and attitudes as well as actions for granted. We grew up learning the Texas way was by far the best way. I still believe it and am glad the Wylys put it in print.

Even though I'm a native Texan, there were lots of facts I never knew until I read this book. My husband loved it, too.
