5.0 out of 5 stars A must have even for the 1st time buyer - My #1 Favorite, December 2, 2000

This review is from: Texas - Greatest Hits + 9 (27 Tracks) (Audio CD)
Nothing else defines the tragedy of US radio like the fact that you haven't heard of Texas. This is my #1 favorite band of all time. (Other favorites include Anne Lennox, Mae Moore, Sonia Dada) If I was on that island and I had to pick just one CD, it would be this or Hush, also by Texas.

Just buy the album if you like female vocals at all. There are new tracks for old fans and this album really showcases the band from start to finish. I couldn't wait and bought it from the amazon.co.uk site and its been playing non-stop in my car for the last week.

Sharleen Spiteri has a Voice (yes, capital V) with the purity and range of Anne Lennox at her best and the soulful blues quality of classic female motown artists like Diana Ross. The music isn't an afterthought either - the band has more talent than all the groups I've heard on my local Top 40 station put together and squared.

Texas' music can best be described as britpop with blues influence, but that doesn't do it justice.

Here's what's on the album

Track Listings Disc: 1 1. I don't want a lover 2. In demand 3. Say what you want 4. Summer son 5. Inner smile 6. So in love with you 7. Black eyed boy 8. So called friend 9. Everyday now 10. 5.0 out of 5 stars Flawless, April 29, 2001

I never use the word flawless more than when I'm talking about the music of Texas who, along with the Corrs, constitute one of the greatest injustices occurring on the US music scene today. Fronted by the entrancing Sharleen Spiteri, this bands revels in making phenomenal pop music--yes, they are a pop band, highlighted by touches of classic soul(Motown) and R&B(Prince). With nary a misstep in sight, the disc also contains some of their early work, which leans toward country-rock/pop(think Maria McKee or Cowboy Junkies), highlighted by 'I Don't Want A Lover' and the gently rocking 'Everyday Now'. As good as their early work was, they really hit their stride when they began drawing on their pop strengths, supremely represented here by 'Say What You Want','When We Are Together', and 'Halo', among others. The three new tracks continue in this vein, all first-rate records, making this a great intro to an overlooked treasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars The very best of Texas, December 24, 2000

Texas is a great band. They play pop rock in an unique way and that's why they make success. This greatest hits compilation brings you Texas best songs ever, as well as new tracks. "In demand", the first single, has potential, with good lyrics about the end of a relationship and the way one lover saw each other. "Say what you want", from "white on blonde" album, is surely my favorite track. I also like the chorus of "halo", about a girl adored by everyone. "Put your arms around me" is captivating and once was included in a soundtrack for drew barrymore's cinderela. It is a wonderful song which makes you feel an instant inner peace, specialy due to the slow way it is performed. You can also find in this CD "In our lifetime", from "notting hill" soundtrack and "summer son", a good track from their previous studio album "the hush".

This special edition also includes some remixes, which are good as well. However, none of them can be compared to the original versions of the songs, which are much better.

4.0 out of 5 stars time for walking down memory lane, November 2, 2000

well it's unbelievable that texas has been around for about adecade now. From their 1989's Southside debut till their most recent1999's The Hush, Sharleen Spiteri seems to grow prettier and the voiceever so full. With 5 ablums at the helm including 1991's Mother'sHeaven, 1994's Rick Road and 1997's White on Blond, Texas has grownmore R&B and hip-hop in outlook and their #1 UK smash Say What UWant was re-released with a Wu-Tang clan remix! More evidently on lastyear's The Hush which was decidely more hiphop in flavor but stillretaining the unique Texas sound. This collection brings together 16of their best hits. Though they have gained more recognition only from1997 onwards, their earlier hits such as the sweet I Don't Want ALover deserves a listen. And for the 2nd disk of remixes for thislimited edition, several remixes of their recent tunes are includedfor that club spin. For America, they are still misiing out on a greatUK band and it looks like the new single In Demand, co-written byTexas and American R&B guru Dallas Austin (TLC, Madonna, etc.) isstill not gonna break them in the States, even with remixes tailoredfor the US market (US Mix). American radio for that matter is tooresistant to many genres of music within the US itself, let alone someartist from abroad...not unless u come wup with stoopid lyrics likeWho Let The Dogs Out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-crafted pop tunes, January 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Texas - Greatest Hits + 9 (27 Tracks) (Audio CD)
Why give a "pop" album 5 stars? Well, "pop" is short for "popular," and that's shorthand for "crowd-pleasing". Texas' crowd-pleasing music makes for great listening around the house, in the car, anywhere. This collection pulls together a nice variety of material to make it a diverse and representative collection.

So, buy it. You'll be part of a very pleased crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great - just what I expected from Texas., November 12, 2000
This review is from: Texas - Greatest Hits + 9 (27 Tracks) (Audio CD)
I really love Texas and was really pleased when they bought out their greatest hits, if only to have all of my favourites ( and then some) on one CD. I too, don't understand why this group haven't made it in the US. The Americans don't know what they are missing - oh and by the way in case Texas ever read this - loved the video for 'In Demand' with Alan Rickman. Who knew the Sheriff of Nottingham could be so cool and dashing (!). Go out and buy the CD - you know you want too!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!, January 7, 2001

After buying buying 'Southside', and their comeback album 'White On Blonde' I thought I pretty muched owned Texas'best offerings, so after receiving this album, I thoughts it would just work as a combination of both....no way...this greatest hits package takes Texas to an entirely new level altogether!!! The classic 80's tracks are just that, - classic, the stuff from the mid to late 90's is uncannily reminiscient of Diana Ross and the Supremes, and the newer tracks - "In Demand" and "Inner Smile", are by no means space fillers - in fact theese two songs could be rated as some of their best work yet!!!

Two words - Buy it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars About time, November 28, 2000
By

This review is from: Texas - Greatest Hits + 9 (27 Tracks) (Audio CD)
Its about time that Texas released a greatest hits album, as now new fans will be able to listen to the older songs without having to invest in the older albums. The album contains all of their newest hits like Summer Son and In Demand, and their older low key songs like I Dont want A Lover, so overall its a pretty mixed bag. The combination of tracks on this album show that over the years Texas have matured and moved on from when they started in the 80,s. This will be a perfect gift for anyone of all ages.
