"Kathleen has done it again in this beautiful tale of a sexy and confident cowboy who had me liking him from page one to loving him every page thereafter." --Amazon Review

From the Author

Everything in Annie Douglas' life has taught her that men can't be trusted. Although Burke is big, strong and not seemingly gentle, Annie feels drawn to the handsome, Texas cowboy. Upon discovering Burke's advertisement for a wife, Annie shyly asks if he might consider her.
Burke Dawson wants children; unfortunately, that also includes a wife. His first wife was a citified hellcat who stole half of his ranch. Now Burke is determined to find an honest, country girl with no expectations of love.

Misunderstandings, accidents, and treachery leads to Annie leaving shattered and alone. Can their shaking start lead to the possible loving relationship they both desire but neither is sure of?

I am kind of sorry to give this story such a low rating. First, because it's mostly due to my personal desire to actually ENJOY reading a romance, and second, because I got it for free. Which I appreciate. I read this in one sitting, but only because about a quarter of the way in I was desperate to find something to feel good about. I also need to mention there were a lot of errors, even sometimes it didn't make sense (especially timelines), but it didn't detract too much and that's not why I gave it such a low rating.

I didn't like this story because the supposed hero was totally clueless, even cruel in his total lack of respect and/or faith in his wife. Even though the heroine proved herself to be a sweet, innocent, sincere woman, the hero ALWAYS believed his vicious ex-wife over her, regardless of how obvious she was portrayed. I feel the author just got a LOT carried away with the angst factor in trying to build conflict in the story. DID SHE EVER!

Of course there's a happy ending, because who doesn't want to get back together with such a strong, trustworthy, likeable hero, huh? And I can even see a set-up for the next book... but there's no WAY I'll ever willingly subject myself to this style of writing again. But, to each his own. Maybe some of you like this mega angst-ey stuff. Here's some of what actually goes on in this 'romance'. . .

Don't read any further if you don't want to know story details...

The hero actually lets the ex-wife move in with them (they're newlyweds). Then the ex proceeds to 1. trick the current wife into stepping in an iron animal trap, 2.

This book started off good enough. The abused, downtrodden, heroine meets the sexy cowboy as he helps her out with her stranded car. A little later she learns that he has advertised for a wife. A.K.A. housekeeper, broodmare, hardly a partner and wife. But, whatever. She applies for the job. But she is from New York and he has already been burned by an ex-wife that was a city girl so he is not ready to jump the broom with another one.

But they get together anyway. At times he is a loving, caring fellow and then the next day as the sun comes up he is cold and possessive. She knows his thoughts and feelings are tainted by this ex-wife. She comes from a background of abuse suffered at the hands of a step-father, a witch of a mother and after they die t she is turned over to the abusive step-brother. Now it is obvious at this point that our heroine has neither a spine nor a brain. In this day and age, LEAVE. But she chooses to stay under his control until she meets the cowboy.

She sees this as her chance to have a home and family of her own plus she is very attracted to the cowboy. Being a virgin on the wedding night she has a lot to learn but she has read enough romance novels that she gets with the program pretty quick. Things are troubled but she is working hard to make it work.

He on the other hand does not want to give his heart again. He wants a broodmare, housekeeper, etc. but he doesn't really want to love his wife. You like the guy but at times he is a pig. However, from here on is where I lost it. I got so mad I quit reading. So, be aware the rest will be under a

SPOILER ALERT....the ex-wife shows up while he is out of the house.

This is the second novel I've read by Kathleen Ball and I must say, she did it again. She had me falling in love along with her characters. Kathleen stirs up, in me, such raw emotions when I read her novels.

Her characters, true to life, had me crying and laughing along with them. The pain Annie goes through tugged at my heart so much, that I actually felt small aches in my own heart. And Burke...sometimes I felt like giving him a slap across the face and telling him to 'snap out of it.' But he has his own pain going on and I found myself empathizing with him as well.

But, Alice...I hated her. And, I'm sure that was Ms. Ball's intent. Alice was the perfect villainess. Kathleen Ball wrote her so well, that you have no choice but to hate her. Texas Haven didn't disappoint...Alice did have her day.

I loved this book, and I am thrilled that there will be a sequel. I was so engrossed in her little town of Texas that I didn't want to leave.

Annie is sent to look at some land her step-brother, Sonny, bought in Texas. When she gets to the property, she runs into Burke who asks what she is doing on his land. Annie has no self-confidence because she has been mentally and physically abused. She doesn't trust men and sure doesn't want to get Burke angry but shows him the deed to the land, proving that her step-brother owns it. Burke is a handsome, strong rancher (though pretty gullible) who wants nothing to do with women after his ex-wife took him to the cleaners in their divorce. He does want children so needs a wife but doesn't want love so he has been advertising for a wife. Annie wants a family too so she applies for the 'job'. They get married and everything is actually going pretty good until ex-wife, Alice, shows up and makes life miserable for them.

This book was really well written with lots of suspenseful scenes that kept me turning the pages. I didn't want to stop reading this so I stayed up most of the night. Alice was such a witch and tried to get rid of Annie in so many terrible ways that I didn't want to believe that someone could actually be as horrible as she was. And then we find out that she has teamed up with Annie's abusive step-brother so they can get Annie's huge inheritance. I felt so sorry for Annie because she wanted to be loved so much but she ends up with Burke who just wants a partner. Then her life gets even worse when Alice and Sonny are against her. You will really get caught up in the lives of the characters in this book. I loved the surprising twists and turns in this story. I highly recommend it.
