Book Description

May 4, 2009
Lily's childhood happiness is shattered when her father is murdered by political opponents. In desperation, she consents to a loveless marriage with Emmett Moss. When his niece arrives at their ranch, the lady-like Claire presents a cool contrast to tomboy Lily. Known for her common sense more than her beauty, Lily forges a friendship with the delicate Claire that outlasts everything in their lives except the land that provides their sustenance. "Both Lily and Claire are authentic examples of pioneer women who attain strength and autonomy in later life if the hardships of their youth haven't killed them first." NEW MEXICO MAGAZINE "A fine writer." THE NEW YORK TIMES "Her elegant prose is a pleasure to read." LIBRARY JOURNAL

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Sixteen-year-old Lily Cassidy has lost her father to an assassin at the beginning of the infamous Lincoln County War. The burden of supporting her mother and her crippled brother weighs mightily on her shoulders, but there is no one else. She knows who killed her father and why but is powerless to do anything about it. Lily's only hope for justice is "Uncle" Emmett Moss, a friendly local rancher whose fairness and common sense shine like a beacon to Lily's eyes. She's taken aback when widowed Emmett proposes marriage, but she accepts as a way to support her mother and brother. With Lily spurring him on, Emmett takes on Henry Hart, the man who hired Robert Cassidy's killer. It sets off a bloody conflagration in which many of Lily's friends and neighbors die. Through it all, Lily matures rapidly into a strong, clear-eyed woman who accepts the strengths and weaknesses of those around her with equal aplomb. A stylishly written western, full of memorable characters. Wes Lukowsky --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling Tale of Revenge, January 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Texas Lily (Hardcover)
A fictional account of the Lincoln County War from the perspective of the Pecos Valley, this book contains more truth than the cold hard facts, with the exception of providing a happy ending for those who deserved it. A chilling tale of revenge and lost romance, its theme is of ultimate forgiveness and peace found in the discipline of daily love. A truly moral tale.
