Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
One day in late 1999, I sat in a Dallas deli booth with my friend & hero Little Jack Melody, talking about our respective bands. I was throwing him some cockamamie fit of theory having to do with what I thought my band’s target demographic was, how hard it was to pick the Radio Song, and who knows what else. I don’t even remember. What I do remember was Little Jack dithering over his Reuben & chips and rather absently saying, "I don’t know, all I ever wanted to do was make an album I liked."

Strange as it may seem, this completely blew my mind. I had spent a little shy of a decade working so hard on the upward climb, so hard on winning over sports bar crowds, so hard on the rock-n-roll dream, that I had forgotten what it was that had made me want to write songs in the first place. I really wasn’t interested in rocking the house. I wanted to make an album I liked.

So as they say on the television, I busted up the band, cobbled together a studio, and proceeded to make... what? Well, it’s an album. It has fast songs, slow songs, songs with drums, and songs without them. There are guitars, household objects, sounds from the backyard, whatever I like. And lots & lots of melodies.

Interestingly, what came out of this is a document of sorts. A document of my life to date. Dayjobs, gigs, self-important doormen, fear of hipness, whatever.

But truly, honestly, what you see before you is an album I like. And since everyone believes in their own good taste, I happen to think you’ll like it as well.

Product Description
Somewhere in the space between Aimee Mann, Tom Waits, Pink Floyd, and R.E.M. exists "texas", the new album by the matthew show. As the title suggests, the man who calls himself the matthew show was born a Texan, though he now lives in New York City. Whip-smart, tight pop tunes like "The Loneliest Boy In Toyland" and the delightfully evil "Office Suite" offer a warped insight into a life lived on the edge of that quintessential American state.

4.0 out of 5 stars Showing Off the Best, September 12, 2005
An excellent mix of witty satire and touching lyrics. Never too heavy on the slush or too light on the humour. If this was a souffle, it would be perfect!

The artist deserves wider coverage and I'd recommend Office Suite part 2 & Lonelist Boy in Toyland to anyone. Totally brill

4.0 out of 5 stars Good heavens!!!, March 7, 2004
By Prestoni (TX, USA) - See all my reviews
Well yes. It is one fine album. Always amazed at what these Texas boys can do. You just can't keep them away from a guitar!!! and they can all sing like hevenly hosts!!!! (The girls too, of course.) Broyles has come a long way with singlemindedness and determination. Not to mention talent and ambition!!! I love this album. It is music from the heart. You will find youself humming his tunes, and tapping his rhythms a lot. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird, funny, sweet and occasionally rocking, October 24, 2003
By A Customer
*Texas* grabs you by the ears and makes you listen to this guy, the matthew show, who writes funny and moving lyrics set to light, country-rock-inflected catchy melodies. Then he likes to mess with you by whipping out a Floydian guitar solo, or perhaps a Hank-Williams-Jr.-worthy drinking song. He's a strange fella, but talented as hell, and his unpretentious, non-posery sound will get inside your head and make you sing along. Don't say you weren't warned.
