Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–Hush, little young'un, don't you squall;/Papa's gonna teach you the Texas drawl. Davis has lassoed the familiar rhymes and filled them with a plethora of places and folklore, from Galveston to Ft. Worth. Bluebonnets, the State Fair's Big Tex, oil wells, the Alamo, armadillos, San Antone, tacos, and tortillas all find a place with Mother Goose as she saddles her magic bird,/Wearing cowboy boots and silver spurs,/With twinkling stars to herd under the Texas sky. Engaging watercolor cartoon illustrations accompany the verses. Padre Pedro picked a passel of peppers on the Pedernales and Jack and Jill strike oil while drilling for water. This compilation might find a home in comparative studies classes.–Mary Elam, Forman Elementary School, Plano, TX

More About the Author

TRAVELS WITH GRANDPAW
A memoir of Texas Tales

I'd like to tell you folks a bit about my new ebook. "Travels With Grandpaw" is Tuesdays With Morrie--in Boots. I'm usually known for my children's picture books. This is my venture into non-fiction writing for adults. It's my coming of age story with Texas in the last century as a backdrop. A memoir of Texas tales.

I traveled with my beloved "Grandpaw" Raymond Lacy (1905-97) across Texas in a relationship that spanned forty-nine years. He taught me about hunting, fishing, loving, kindness, courage and loss. We had many adventures and you can share them, too.

Visit South Texas as Grandpaw faces off against the smartest stub-tailed one-eyed pirate of a rat in in the Lone Star State. Travel back to a Hill Country Christmas in the 1880's as told by an old cowboy born in 1869. Corner a wild tomcat in a Cherokee County outhouse with Raymond and his brother, Alton in 1910. Celebrate an early 1900's East Texas Christmas with a buckboard full of roman candles, a new Barlow pocket knife, music, firewater, and a kind old Cherokee named Joe.

Come along with David, and watch a monumental skeet shooting contest between Grandpaw with his old square-backed Browning and an arrogant skeet shooter shooting an engraved Beretta over and under outside of San Antonio in 1960. Watch Grandpaw and David as they encounter a dancing duck thief near Indianola, Texas.

Attend a country wake in the Texas Piney Woods. Ride along with Ray's band in 1920 when they play a rural dance--and have to fend off a gang of troublemakers and a vicious pit bull. Stand beside Grandpaw as he stands up against four young hoodlums--when he was in his eighties!

This book is about growing up, growing old, and the wheel of life, but mostly it is about laughter--and Raymond Lacy, an unbribed soul.

This review is from: Texas Mother Goose (Hardcover)
I got this book for my california grandchildren. They never got it. I kept it. This is more adult humor twist on the nursery rhymes that grown ups will understand better than kids. I keep it in my reception room for my patients.
