4.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, but great info
This book is really poorly written, with factual errors and sophomoric humor. Many of the musicians are poorly represented, some with merely a reference. But what is amazing is how many great musicians are from Texas. I found myself thinking about the information I learned from this book a lot, and I found myself recommending the book for its information to a number...

This book is really poorly written, with factual errors and sophomoric humor. Many of the musicians are poorly represented, some with merely a reference. But what is amazing is how many great musicians are from Texas. I found myself thinking about the information I learned from this book a lot, and I found myself recommending the book for its information to a number of people as well. Don't look for a literary experience, but you might get a lot out of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative but flawed, August 26, 1999
This review is from: Texas Music (Hardcover)
As someone who has been a fan of the Austin music scene since the late 70's, I enjoyed reading about the bands I've followed over the years. There are lots of interesting tidbits in the book, but on the negative side Mr Koster tends to use the same phrases and descriptions too many times. He also could have used a fact-checker, he says the Sex Pistols played at Randy's Radio when it was actually Randy's Rodeo and he mixes up Southwest Texas State Univ with Southwestern Univ, just to name a couple mistakes.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who is a music fan and is interested in the history of music in Texas.

Texas Poker Wisdom

I wonder if he would like to shoot dice over the phone??

Still, I enjoy the stories of the fabulous West Texas musicians. It is worth reading. More interviews, stories of West Texas musicians are on www.virtualubbock.com I just put an article up there entitled Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Joe Ely, and the Cotton Club. It adds a different flavor.

1.0 out of 5 stars Is English his first language? Must be!, July 19, 2004

This review is from: Texas Music (Paperback)
The saddest part of the story is that libraries all across the US had to buy this book as one of the only two available print references on TX Music. I bet most English writers in the third world can write much better. Contentwise, the book does have some of the requisite basic information. But that's about all.

5.0 out of 5 stars who is Sweetie Pie?, February 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Texas Music (Hardcover)
A friend of mine picked this book up and he really liked it. I have yet to read it, but I did notice that there is a band from El Paso named "Sweetie Pie" mentioned in Ch.5 (I think). I was wondering if anybody knows anything about that band and would like to share some info. I think I remember that band, and I would just like to verify. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing book!, February 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Texas Music (Hardcover)
This is the most incredible book music book I've ever read. Mr. Koster has collected the most interesting selection of artists all held by the common bond of having Texas as their home state. The blues section is full of revelations on nearly every page. Who knew so many incredible, world famous musicians came from the great state of Texas?
