not what I expected,
By Marie (Denver, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Texas Peppers: The Jalapeno Cookbook (Flavors of Home) (Plastic Comb)
My biggest disappointment was the size and quality for the cost. This book is a very small, postcard size, spiral bound along the top, homemade looking book. There are no photos. Some of the recipes really are great, but pretty basic, and include ingredients like ketchup, velveeta cheese, canned chilies, pickled jalapenos, "packaged mexican salad dressing mix," canned chili, canned refried beans, canned olives, mayonnaise, and refrigerated pizza crust.
I have a friend who will love this book, but I found very few recipes I would make without having to creatively substitute for all the pre-processed food ingredients. I think it would be worth $5 at the most, even less than that to me. I actually bought it as a gift to give with a rack for roasting stuffed peppers, but there were only three recipes for stuffed peppers, one of which required frying, and one was no-bake canned peppers. I will say that the book description does portray its size. I think I just jumped too quickly on the name and cover photo. Also, a word of warning to vegetarians, many if not most of the recipes include meat.

Index card sized recipe book contains no pictures and is just an unorganized mix of anything containing Jalapenos. It has only one or two recipes for stuffed peppers, so if you are buying it to go with the Jalapeno cooker - don't bother. I would not recommend paying more than $2 for this cookbook.

If you like jalapenos and spicy foods, you'll love this book! My copy came at the perfect time - just when the jalapenos in my garden were starting to ripen.

This is a great idea book for ways to use jalapenos for appetizers, tapas or light dishes. Not all recipes are firey hot, in fact you can tone any recipe down if you want the tast of jalapeno but not the heat. Most recipes are short and nothing is very labor intensive. Enjoy!

I combined this with the jalapeno cooking rack -- also sold on Amazon. It was a Christmas gift for my husband. He's already found some recipes he wants to try. He grows his own peppers, but will have to wait until the warm months and his garden "crop" to try out the recipes. It's a small spiral book, but has over 100 recipes, even things like a jalpeno martini! A brief history of the pepper, itself is included, as well as TX festivals for "hot stuff" listed by month with contact information. I would say it's worth the $7.95 price tag.

Lots of good choices; not very pepper-centered,

This booklet is built well and has lots of recipes. But they are not really receipes for peppers. I first thought I might be getting a book on ways to cook peppers, but these are really recipes that can have peppers in them. Not much different than a regular cookbook in that regard. Still, the recipes are good.

Quick and easy, not complicated at all! Instructions are concise and easy to follow. The fold over booklet makes it easy to read the instructions while cooking. The ingredients are easy to find. Wish I had found this book sooner!

The "canyon beans" recipe is worth the book. I have twin, 13 year old sons. They love the recipes. You may tone them down by eliminating some of the peppers. This is a very good addition to your cookbook collection. I recommend it!

The book is very small in size and the recipes are not particularly creative. They don't make great use of peppers and the product is underwhelming. Might make for a kitchy stocking stuffer but won't be in my regular rotation of cook books.
