It's always on top of the pile ...,

... because I keep taking it out to look at again. The photographs are stunning. And Graves's prose is just lovely, as it always is. The reason the essays are all too brief (as the previous reviewer noted) is that they originally appeared in "Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine," which set strict limits on length. I read each piece in the series as it came out, but it's lovely to see them all in one place, with more - and very well printed - illustrations.

More Words Please,
This review is from: Texas Rivers (Hardcover)
Meinzer's photography was great but John Graves seemed at a loss for words, i.e. his essays were far too short. Graves takes time to get into his subject ("Goodbye to a River" and "Hardscrabble"). Even though I wanted more, what he wrote is first rate. He understands the magic and individuality of each river, even my Llano.

Texas Rivers, by John Graves and Wyman Meinzer, is a very special book. Anyone who has read and enjoyed Graves' Goodbye to a River knows Mr. Graves absorbing narration, and the photographs by Mr. Meinzer are stunning. The book is hard to put down and I find myself constantly returning to enjoy it. Highly recommended for Texas history buffs and lovers of beautiful Texas scenic photography. Belongs in every Texas book collection.

Once again, John Graves delivers stunning photographs of Texas. The focus is some of the greatest and prettiest rivers Texas has to offer and Graves does a brilliant job capturing their beauty.

As with all John Graves books, the history and stories around the rivers of Texas are interesting and off the beaten track. If you're not in the mood to read, just thumb through the gorgeous pictures and enjoy the same relaxing benefits that meditation offers. Present day Texas is a political, budgetary, educational mess. This book returns the reader to the nature and history that once made Texas great.
