Book Description

February 2, 2010
In Massacre at Goliad, tensions mount between Mexican authorities and American newcomers. Revolution is in the air, something Thomas Buckalew welcomes but his brother Joshua fears, since Joshua is in love with a Mexican girl. The story touches on the immortal battle of the Alamo but centers on the infamous Goliad massacre, and ultimately the decisive battle of San Jacinto, which made Texas an independent republic.

After the Bugles begins where Massacre at Goliad ends—on the battlefield at San Jacinto. Joshua Buckalew tries to put the pieces back together but finds that starting over in the aftermath of war can be as challenging as the war itself. The racial differences that helped foment the conflict have not gone away. And Texas finds that being an independent republic can be more difficult than being a colonial extension of Mexico.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The latest from prolific Texan novelist Kelton (Hard Trail to Follow) is really two novels, both concerning the Texas revolution against Mexico as witnessed by two young brothers, Joshua and Thomas Buckalew. In the first book, Massacre at Goliad, the Buckalews' dream of adventure and free land is dispelled by the harsh reality of the West: hard work, Indians, bandits and the simmering cultural, racial and political animosity between Americans and Mexicans. When violence finally breaks out, the boys miss the slaughter at the Alamo only to be caught up in the massacre of Texan prisoners at Goliad. Only one brother survives, going on to avenge Goliad at the Battle of San Jacinto. In After the Bugles, the surviving brother returns home to rebuild his ranch and his life, but must contend with cheating opportunists, murderous outlaws and deadly Comanche attacks, as well as growing Texan racism against his Mexican friends and neighbors. As with all of Kelton's westerns, characters are colorful and well drawn, the action is fast and bloody, and the plotting carefully thought out, making this another supercharged yarn. (Nov.)

Review

"Kelton, a wonderful storyteller, speaks in the language of the late 1870's. Many of his descriptions and phrases remind me of the verbiage my parents used after settling in eastern Oklahoma when I was child and before I attended Norman schools and the university, where many of those earth comments were considered too 'country' for a developing new state. You will enjoy reading this breath of the past." --"Oklahoman" on "Ranger's Law"

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Kelton Two-Fer, November 8, 2008
You just can't go wrong with Kelton. This is the 3rd of the two-fer paperback originals released by Forge--the earlier titles being TEXAS SHOWDOWN and MANY A RIVER. Unlike those, this one really makes sense--MASSACRE AT GOLIAD (1965) and AFTER THE BUGLES (1967) being a two-part story of Thomas and Joshua Buckalew during the time of the infamous Goliad massacre (1836) and the battle of San Jacinto afterwards. There is a new historical introduction by the author. While the two novels belong together under one cover, Forge only deserves * star for their shabby treatment of this fine author--the dustjacket is very cheap and book is printed on what I'd call pulp paper--a subtle down-grading of their earlier two-fers. When he signed up with Forge several years ago, the author's works were always published on acid-free paper. I'm not sure this book will outlast my original paperbacks from the 1960s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nobody writes fictional 1830's Texas Like Elmer Kelton., February 22, 2010
This was my fourth Elmer Kelton book (this one is actually a 2 for 1). I have enjoyed them all. The storylines are manly enough to keep me dialed in while the softer undertones of the story keep your heart in it. Written with the correct history included!

Am I to review the novel or the services of Amazon in delivering the book to me?

As always Amazon was prompt and accurate in your services.

Elmer Kelton is, no doubt, the most superb currently active Texas writer.
No, he is more than that, Mr. Kelton stands eminent among writers nationally. I have read all fifty of his novels, many of which may be classified as historical novels of Texas from 1820 until now days--and the historical events are described with total accuracy to reality while blended in with the adventures of his powerful characters. Please note that Mr. Kelton's tales of Texas heroes are not merely shootem ups.
