5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Kelton Two-Fer
You just can't go wrong with Kelton. This is the 3rd of the two-fer paperback originals released by Forge--the earlier titles being TEXAS SHOWDOWN and MANY A RIVER. Unlike those, this one really makes sense--MASSACRE AT GOLIAD (1965) and AFTER THE BUGLES (1967) being a two-part story of Thomas and Joshua Buckalew during the time of the infamous Goliad massacre (1836) and...

Far Canyon was published in 1994
The "new" 2 fer consisting of Texas Sunrise (2008) and Massacre at Goliad (1965) & After the Bugles (1967) are simply repackaged old books.
If you are a old fan of Elmer Kelton you have already read them. Dont be fooled by the new covers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Kelton Two-Fer, November 8, 2008
This review is from: Texas Sunrise: Two Novels of the Texas Republic (Hardcover)
You just can't go wrong with Kelton. This is the 3rd of the two-fer paperback originals released by Forge--the earlier titles being TEXAS SHOWDOWN and MANY A RIVER. Unlike those, this one really makes sense--MASSACRE AT GOLIAD (1965) and AFTER THE BUGLES (1967) being a two-part story of Thomas and Joshua Buckalew during the time of the infamous Goliad massacre (1836) and the battle of San Jacinto afterwards. There is a new historical introduction by the author. While the two novels belong together under one cover, Forge only deserves * star for their shabby treatment of this fine author--the dustjacket is very cheap and book is printed on what I'd call pulp paper--a subtle down-grading of their earlier two-fers. When he signed up with Forge several years ago, the author's works were always published on acid-free paper. I'm not sure this book will outlast my original paperbacks from the 1960s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nobody writes fictional 1830's Texas Like Elmer Kelton., February 22, 2010
This was my fourth Elmer Kelton book (this one is actually a 2 for 1). I have enjoyed them all. The storylines are manly enough to keep me dialed in while the softer undertones of the story keep your heart in it. Written with the correct history included!

Am I to review the novel or the services of Amazon in delivering the book to me?

As always Amazon was prompt and accurate in your services.

Elmer Kelton is, no doubt, the most superb currently active Texas writer.
No, he is more than that, Mr. Kelton stands eminent among writers nationally. I have read all fifty of his novels, many of which may be classified as historical novels of Texas from 1820 until now days--and the historical events are described with total accuracy to reality while blended in with the adventures of his powerful characters. Please note that Mr. Kelton's tales of Texas heroes are not merely shootem ups.

It was a great product. The company was poor in communication when emailed as i never heard back from them on my question. It ended up being irrelevant but coutesy is still expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fiction based on Texas Historical Facts, January 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Elmer Kelton captures the Texas landscape and character traits so well. There aren't many works of fiction that base their story on the history of Goliad, Texas. I am from Goliad, and it thrills me that he took the time to research the area and the Battle of Goliad to provide such a touching tribute to the 300 lives lost there. This book is a fast read with interesting story lines. If you enjoy historical texts and well-described scenery, than you will enjoy this.
