A Superb Recording, April 29, 1999

This is a very good album. It has a sound that I love to hear and try to perform myself. I am a 52 year old Memphian who has decided pick up my horn again and play it right. This time I want to be able to play music like I heard my father hum, whistle, sang. Bubby Tate is playing that music. I learn to play rock 'n roll during the 60's but missed learning to play the music of all music (jazz). Now that I am aged and mellowed, I get a lot of time and pleasure reading, researching, practicing, listening to, learning and performing jazz. This album will be among my collections along with Colman Hawkins, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Sil Austin, "Prez",and John Coltrane. Buddy Tate really swings 'Chicago' as well as 'The Texas Twister'. He is so melodic on 'Talk of The Town' which is the reason that I give him 5 stars.

I picked this album up _almost_ by accident, I knew Tate used to play with Basie, and if he's good enough for Basie, well... Anyway, it's one of my favorite albums, at times smokin' at others mellow. Fine arrangements and musicianship. You can't go wrong with this one.
