More About the Author

Susan Wiggs's life is all about family, friends...and fiction. She lives at the water's edge on an island in Puget Sound, and she commutes to her writers' group in a 17-foot motorboat. She's been featured in the national media, including NPR's "Talk of the Nation," and is a popular speaker locally and nationally.

When her recent novel, FIRESIDE, hit #1 on the New York Times, the author reportedly reacted to the news by "putting on my lipstick and sweeping the patio." Why? Because she knew that within a matter of minutes, her girlfriends would show up to pop the bubbly and help her celebrate. [Update: FIRESIDE has been chosen of one of Amazon.com's Top Ten Romances of 2009.]

According to Publishers Weekly, Wiggs writes with "refreshingly honest emotion," and the Salem Statesman Journal adds that she is "one of our best observers of stories of the heart [who] knows how to capture emotion on virtually every page of every book." Booklist characterizes her books as "real and true and unforgettable." She is the recipient of three RITA (sm) awards and four starred reviews from Publishers Weekly for her books. Her books make frequent appearances on Amazon's "best of" lists. Several of her novels have been listed as Indie Next picks and optioned as feature films. Her novels have been translated into more than two dozen languages and have made national bestseller lists, including the USA Today, Washington Post and New York Times lists.

The author is a former teacher, a Harvard graduate, an avid hiker, an amateur photographer, a good skier and terrible golfer, yet her favorite form of exercise is curling up with a good book.

I LOVED THIS BOOK UP TO THE VERY END. THE ENDING WAS AWFUL I JUST WANTED TO CRY. IT WAS LIKE WATCHING A MOVIE AND THE POWER GOES OFF NEVER COMES BACK ON. WHERE IS THE LOVE? WHERE IS THE MEETING BETWEEN FATHER AND SON? WHERE IS MY HAPPILY EVER AFTER? PLEASE PLEASE WRITE A NEW ENDING.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for 1987 original publication, February 26, 2008
I collect authors so for those who have given this book a less than stellar review please take into consideration that the book was originally published in 1987. Why do I collect authors - because I like to see how they have grown as a writer and a person over the years. For 1978, and one of Susan Wigg's earlier efforts this was an excellent book. But it cannot compete with her newest books, especially the Lakeshore Chronicles. Why, because Susan has grown as a writer and a person, and the industry norms have changed a bit. At the time "Texas Wildflower" was written it was very new to have a young woman become something other than a simpering damsel in distress, today we expect gritty, tough heroines who make us believe we can do anything. For those of you who choose this book to become acquainted with Susan Wiggs you should really check out the Lakeside Chronicles. But if you want to read Susan Wiggs' early work by all means read this one and her other great books from the 80'. What is fun is to start with the earliest books she wrote then come forward until now and experience her growth as a writer and person as I have.

1.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating & Disappointing story, August 22, 2011
I've read a number of Susan Wiggs' books and enjoyed them but this one was a tough read. The characters were not believable - supposedly bright people that did really stupid things. I almost didn't stick with it but I did and then the ending was just awful. Story lines left hanging and a totally non-believable and abrupt conclusion.
