There's nothing better than a day at the beach, but a full day of UV rays can take its toll. Enter the Texsport Calypso cabana, a sturdy beach shelter that's ideal for long afternoons on the shore. Made of heavy-duty polyurethane-coated taffeta for increased UV protection and cool comfort, the Calypso cabana protects you on three sides, with a roof that extends over the top as you lounge below. You can sit inside the cabana to avoid the sun, lie partially covered to protect just your face, or huddle up for full-body protection when the winds start whipping.

The cabana also offers a durable ripstop polyethylene floor and three no-see-um mesh windows with zippered storm flaps. And the shelter is a breeze to set up and take down thanks to the three-pole pin-and-ring frame system and the shock-corded fiberglass poles. Other features include four weight/sand bags for increased stability, corner stakes, and a handy storage bag. Flame-retardant to CPAI-84 specifications, the Calypso cabana measures 48 by 84 by 48 inches (W x H x D) and comes in brilliant blue with rainbow stripes along the top.

Also, there were no instructions with the product and trying to get the shelter assembled the first time it was a little confusing.

We used this cabana on 2 separate trips to the beach and have loved it. It was a great place for my 6 month old to sleep and not get sunburned. Great cross breezes with the flaps up. Didn't use the sandbags, just put our cooler in one front corner and beach bag in the other. Also made for nice semi-private nursing with adequate breeze to not overheat. Packs relatively compactly, but cannot fit tent and poles back into one bag. Still the 2 together do not take up much space. After years of using an umbrella, this was better for our needs with an infant and is easier to carry around. Would recommend it to those with small children.

Bought this for our spring break camping trip in Florida's panhandle.

First day was VERY windy. If we had a tail, I think we could have flown it as a kite. I consider it a success that the cabana didn't rip apart.

Our second adventure worked much better. Still windy, but not as bad as the first day. Filled the pockets with sand, (and buried them in sand as well) Worked great and it was nice to have a place to keep all the beach toys and get out of the sun and wind occasionally.

This tent is a great alternative to an umbrella and stands up to the wind surprisingly well. However, there is an issue that's really annoying. The carry bag is very narrow. Once you've opened up the tent, it's extremely difficult to roll it up tightly enough to fit into the carry bag - especially when you're out there in the wind and sand without a flat surface. And forget the poles, they won't fit it, you have to carry them by hand in their own bag (which has no handle, just a tie). It's such a stupid design flaw because the carry bag is made of some generic fabric - would 1-2 extra inches have been that expensive?

Let's talk about both basic idea and this particular item.
On the idea level, it's basically an alternative to a beach umbrella, and there are pros and cons to each:
PROS
1. If you're flying to a beach the cabana is superior, because it packs small enough to fit in a standard suitcase and only weighs about three pounds.
2. Once erected and anchored properly, it will handle windy conditions better than an umbrella.
CONS
1. Its shade coverage is very sensitive to the angle of the sun. If the sun is right overhead you don't have full body coverage, because your legs will stick out (assuming you a sitting in beach chairs). If the sun is at an angle, then to get full coverage you need position the cabana with the sun at your back. This means the sun determines your view of the beach.
All told, on the idea level it's definitely worthwhile

Now, let's talk this particular item.
1. As another reviewer noted, the carry sack is too tight. It can be a real challenge to roll the thing up tightly enough to get it back in.
2. The shock-cording of the poles is not very durable. One section of a pole came loose on my purchase the third time I erected the cabana and needs to be restrung.
3. Running the poles through the sleeves makes me feel the sleeves may tear at some point. I've seen other cabanas that use clips instead of sleeves, and this may be a better design (although clips will add weight and probably would make the thing more expensive.
4. The screen windows on this unit are good. You need the ventilation. Don't buy a cabana that doesn't provide good ventilation.
5. My biggest complaint is the angle of the sun issue. If there are cabanas that have some sort of extended overhead protrusion to create more shade, that would be worthwhile.

I am so happy we bought this tent! It is very durable so easy to set up and put back in the bag! We have a 14, 12, 9 and 17 month old at the beginning of our vacation our baby didn't want anything to do with the sand and he stayed in the tent all day! When I was up in the room giving him a nap our other 3 children stayed at the beach with dad and would rest in the tent or sit and have a snack. If you are going on a beach vacation and do not want to spend $100 on a tent then this is the tent for you! We had tons of compliments on it. I did set it up in our living room before we left and took it down and it fits in the bag perfect! We were at the beach 7 days and I did not worry about folding it back up in the bag everyday we had a utility room that it could be folded up and sit in. We cleaned it all out and rolled it back in for our trip home! The sand pockets were all we needed and we had some really windy days! If you buy this you will not be disappointed! Enjoy!

We recently used our beach shelter for the first time. We did take the precaution of setting it up once at home before trying to do it on the beach in the wind. It was quite windy on the beach but it only took about 10 min for two of us to put it up, including filling and burying the sand anchors. We probably could do it a bit faster the next time. The sand anchors worked well and kept the tent stable. We were able to leave it with just a backpack in it and it showed no signs of wanting to blow away. We pitched it with the back to the wind and found one design feature that could use changing. The flaps for the windows are inside the tent and they only have a couple of tie downs each. When it is really windy the wind blows under the tied down flaps, holding them partly open, and then gets directed straight down into the bottom of the tent. It would have been better to put the flaps on the outside of the tent so the wind would blow a closed window flat against the tent outside wall. Adding a few velcro dots along the bottom of the window flaps and on the inside wall might fix the present design. We plan to try that out. We found ourselves laying large towels on the outside of the windows to keep the wind out. It was only 23 C so it made a lot of difference to the comfort level. Rolling up the tent and putting it all away took about 10-15 min maximum. It was not really that hard to roll it up in the wind to get it and the poles and pegs back in the carry bag. We bought this shelter due to its light weight and compact size when rolled up. It was light weight and easy to carry in the tote bag, as advertised. It also fit quite nicely diagonally in a 26 inch suitcase. We carried it inside our checked airline luggage. Overall good value for the money so far.
