28 x 14" Cast Iron Griddle,
By Steve (Dallas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Texsport Cast Iron 28 x 14-Inch Griddle (Sports)
The griddle was exactly as I hoped it would be. It was big enough to cook meals for several people at the same time and it was sturdy enough to put it on top of burning logs, directly in the campfire.
When I go camping, I always like cooking on my own equipment instead of using a rusty old grill which is already there and probably had local wildlife crawling over the top of it. I would seriously recommend this griddle.

warped right out of the box....Sportsman's Guide did issue a pick-up slip that I didn't ask for. Repackage, reship, remove the wax again is just too much to ask...Just more junk from China.....Save your money

Requires oil to be non-stick,
This review is from: Texsport Cast Iron 28 x 14-Inch Griddle (Sports)
I was looking for a griddle with a non-stick surface so that I could make healthy, no-oil pancakes. Vegetable oil has been shown to cause heart disease (see for example [...]). Animal grease is even worse. I was also looking for an alternative to an aluminum base, because with use, a non-stick surface can become scratched and aluminum should never come in contact with food that we eat (suspect in Alzheimer's, etc.).
So I thought I found just the right product, advertised to be non-stick and cast iron. But I was very disappointed when it arrived and I read the 6 step instructions which included heating it and wiping off the wax, coating with cooking oil or bacon grease, heating it for an hour, possibly re-coating with grease and heating again, cleaning with hot water and then reheating to dry, not using soap to clean it, and storing it with a paper towel. Now all of this oil and effort may be typical of cast iron cooking implements, so it might be fine for others, especially if you don't mind creating and maintaining your non-stick surface through cooking oil or bacon grease. However, if you are trying to minimize oils and fats in your foods, this is definitely not for you. And even if you don't care about fat in your food, I thought you should be aware of all the work required to start using and maintaining this product. I am returning this griddle and after more online research have ordered the All-Clad LTD Nonstick 12-Inch Round Griddle Pan. It claims to be aluminum on the bottom, stainless steel on top, with a non-stick coating on top of that. It should be closer to what I was looking for. After using it, I'll post a review for it. |
